The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Backend Developer with at least 7 years of experience for a contract role to join our Toronto-based team. You will play a critical role in developing the Minimum Viable Product (MVP) of our AI-powered platform, working closely with backend machine learning engineers and DevOps to improve and optimize our existing microservices architecture. Your focus will be on enhancing performance, scalability, and reliability, leveraging technologies like , FastAPI, and vector databases. You must be comfortable working in the EST timezone and fluent in English to ensure seamless collaboration with our Toronto team.

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the team to enhance our microservices-based backend infrastructure, built with ) and Python (FastAPI), for the MVP phase.
• Optimize API gateways and orchestration layers to support real-time, streaming responses using Server-Sent Events (SSE) and WebSockets.
• Integrate and improve interactions with AI frameworks such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, and Vercel AI SDK for dynamic query processing and response generation.
• Work with Redis for session management and conversation context, ensuring low-latency performance.
• Enhance integrations with Pinecone (vector database) for semantic search and data retrieval.
• Partner with DevOps to improve deployment pipelines using Docker, Kubernetes, and Vercel for scalable, serverless architectures.
• Collaborate with machine learning engineers to refine integrations with LLM endpoints (e.g., OpenAI GPT-4o) and external APIs (e.g., job listings, location services).
• Implement security best practices, including JWT/OAuth authentication, TLS encryption, and rate limiting.
• Contribute to performance optimization, including caching strategies and asynchronous processing.
• Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and agile workflows to deliver high-quality, maintainable code for the MVP.

Required Skills & Experience

• 7 years of professional backend development experience, with a focus on scalable, high-performance systems.
• Proficiency in ) and Python (FastAPI) for building microservices.
• Experience with Redis for session management and caching.
• Hands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes for containerized deployments.
• Familiarity with Vercel or similar serverless platforms for deploying APIs and streaming responses.
• Knowledge of REST APIs, SSE, and WebSockets for real-time communication.
• Understanding of AI frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex, or similar for integrating LLMs and vector databases (e.g., Pinecone).
• Strong grasp of security practices, including JWT/OAuth, TLS, and rate limiting.
• Fluency in English (written and verbal) for effective communication with the Toronto team.
• Ability to work in the EST timezone to align with our team's schedule.
• Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including machine learning engineers and DevOps.
• Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to optimizing existing infrastructure.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with AWS services (e.g., ECS, EC2, Lambda, RDS) for cloud deployments.
• Familiarity with PostgreSQL for structured data management.
• Knowledge of LiveKit or similar tools for real-time audio/video processing.
• Exposure to or sentiment analysis tools for enhancing user interactions.
• Contributions to open-source projects or experience with CI/CD pipelines.
