Role

We're looking for a Data Engineer with expertise in managing and analyzing tracking and event data from live sporting events. In this role, you will oversee the full data lifecycle—from data collection and cloud storage to cloud-based analysis. The insights you develop will contribute to enhancing broadcast graphics, highlighting game tactics, player performance, and individual achievements in real-time.

Responsibilities:

Data Collection & Management:

• Ensuring high standards of data quality, accuracy, and consistency across multiple events and data sources.
• Developing and implementing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) pipelines to move data efficiently from source to cloud storage.
• Monitoring data integrity and troubleshoot issues in real-time, ensuring data reliability throughout live events.
• Visualizing data effectively to generate insights and actionable outcomes.

Cloud Storage & Infrastructure:

• Designing and managing cloud-based storage solutions for efficient and secure data management.
• Working with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Azure) to develop scalable solutions, ensuring data is accessible and well-organized for downstream analysis.

Data Analytics & Insights Generation:

• Using statistical and machine learning models to generate insights related to player performance, game strategy, and team tactics.
• Developing algorithms to detect and visualize meaningful patterns in data, such as player movements, ball trajectories, and formation changes.
• Creating automated processes to generate actionable insights that enhance the storytelling in live broadcasts.

Collaboration & Visualization:

• Collaborating with broadcast teams and designers to translate data insights into compelling, real-time graphics for broadcasts and highlight reels.
• Developing dashboards and data visualizations to communicate findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Continuous Improvement & Research:

• Keeping up-to-date with the latest advancements in coding and machine learning.
• Experimenting with new data sources, algorithms, and tools to improve the depth and accuracy of insights.
• Regularly evaluating and refining the analytics pipeline to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.

Qualifications, Skills & Competencies:

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
• 2-5 years of Proven experience in data science roles, preferably with a focus on sports analytics.
• Proficiency in Python, R, or similar programming languages for data analysis and model development.
• Strong experience with cloud platforms and familiarity with data storage solutions.
• Hands-on experience with machine learning and statistical techniques, including supervised/unsupervised learning, time-series analysis, and clustering.
• Familiarity with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI) and libraries (e.g., Matplotlib, Seaborn, Plotly) to create broadcast-ready graphics.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple data projects in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong understanding of sporting tactics and player performance metrics is a plus.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with streaming data and real-time data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Kafka, Apache Spark).
• Knowledge of predictive and prescriptive analytics models.
• Familiarity with player tracking technologies in sports contexts.
