The Director, Critical Facilities Operations and Maintenance is a leadership role holding an administrative responsibility for strategic facility planning and daily operation, maintenance, and repairs of Critical Facilities. Critical Facilities encompasses both electrical and mechanical systems, and this role is expected to have expertise in all areas of Data Center facility design, operations, and maintenance.

The Director, Critical Facilities Operations and Maintenance establishes and enforces consistent administrative policies and procedures within required facilities. This role may supervise NOC operations to include the call center, critical alarm monitoring and response, critical incident management, and RHE services ensuring cross-functional coordination is sustained. This role may also manage processes associated with a new facility/capacity augmentation transitioning to operations to include design reviews, critical plant commissioning, operational readiness audits, and site staffing.

The Director, Critical Facilities Operations and Maintenance contributes and plays a pivotal role in the development and implementation of GDC global/regional strategic policies and procedures ensuring optimal consistency internationally.

This leadership role is accountable for leading various cross functional teams, fostering a collaborative and innovative team culture focused on achieving operational excellence.

Key responsibilities:

  • Operates as an industry expert and thought leader in Data Centre design, management, and maintenance, including speaking and writing visibility to industry groups and customers.
  • Operates as a senior level representative of the company and its industry leadership with customers, industry leaders and regulatory agencies.
  • Manages and leads an industry leading organisation including staff recruitment, development and retention and organisational development that is leading edge.
  • Establishes, implements, and enforces operational site policies, procedures, standards, and operating processes that ensure the highest operational effectiveness to include, but not limited to, budget, staffing, incident management and reporting, safety, training, IT support and executive level reporting.
  • Directly manages partnerships and customer relations to ensure effective planning, design, deployment across the entire value chain. This includes maintaining high level partnerships with vendors and customers, maintaining structured processes for ongoing dialogue and assessments, and operating as a key representative of the company.
  • Oversees major programs and projects including major capital projects with high levels of complexity, schedule impact, cost management and design requirements.
  • Manages complex budgets and strategic plans, including proactive monitoring, communications, and control activities to ensure ongoing achievement and fiscal management.
  • Maintains proactive and clear communications with all levels of the organization, partners, and customers.
  • Responsible for maintaining excellent employee and customer relations which means being able to empathize and relate at all levels of the organization.
  • Performs senior leadership role applying competency in technical and operational activities and is willing to be present during crucial after-hours activities.
  • Provides cross-regional leadership, implements training, and acts as both a coach and mentor to site employees.
  • Works directly with customers, internal teams, installation engineers, technical consultants, and other implementation personnel to coordinate customer turn-ups and critical maintenance.

  • Significant technical background in critical data center facilities, IT Operations, and data center construction, alongside excellent leadership, people, and organization skills More information.
  • Significant background in mechanical, electrical systems design review, layout, and installation, operations, including ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical designs.
  • Significant knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25 and compliance issues.
  • Significant knowledge in industrial safety best practices (i.e., lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA, and state regulations).
  • Significant knowledge of data trending / tracking and analysis and ability to rapidly learn and use metrics and integrated critical monitoring systems.
  • Excellent communications, organization, and influence skills.
  • Ability to adjust communications to the audience and to be able to organize logical thinking and complex information into clear and influential messaging.
  • Ability to think on the feet and interact in dynamic situations.
  • Significant leadership skills with the ability to motivate and mentor people.
  • Ability to operate in and promote a rigorous process-driven environment.
  • Significant ability to lead and facilitate process flows and complex projects, to ensure smooth transitions from across the value chain.

Academic qualifications and certifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering or similar field required (Mechanical preferred).

Required experience:

  • Significant experience within a similar role gained within a highly uptime-sensitive data-intensive organization or critical operations.
  • Significant experience gained within an Intelligence or Government operations is highly desirable.
  • Significant experience managing and motivating critical facilities operations and maintenance teams/function.
