Position Overview

You own the backend architecture that powers a rapidly scaling learning platform. You design, build, and optimise systems that will serve millions of future users while shaping the engineering culture. Your decisions influence product strategy, infrastructure choices, and team growth.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain a scalable, reliable backend for the web and mobile apps using NodeJS and NestJS.
  • Own the full lifecycle of backend services—from development and testing to deployment, monitoring, and performance tuning.
  • Guide and mentor junior developers, set coding standards, and run constructive code reviews.
  • Collaborate with founders and product teams to ship new features such as real-time quizzing, analytics dashboards, and payment integrations.
  • Translate product vision into a technical roadmap and contribute to high-impact architecture decisions.
  • Manage databases, APIs, and cloud services while implementing monitoring and alerting to ensure high availability and uptime.

Must have Criteria

  • 5+ years building and scaling backend systems for high-traffic consumer products (EdTech experience a plus).
  • Deep expertise in NodeJS, NestJS, and TypeScript.
  • Proven experience with microservices architecture, RESTful API design, and both SQL (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (MongoDB, Redis) databases.
  • Ability to mentor engineers, lead technical projects, and foster a collaborative culture through insightful code reviews.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with hands-on experience in logging, monitoring tools (Datadog, New Relic), and performance optimisation.
  • Resourceful startup mindset with a bias for ownership and speed.
  • Degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent proven experience, and a strong GitHub profile.
