Technical Roles & Responsibilities:

1. Product Design & Feasibility:

  • Collaborate with customers and internal teams to understand product requirements.
  • Conduct feasibility studies for manufacturability of sheet metal components.
  • Validate design compatibility with fabrication processes (laser cutting, bending, welding, etc.).

2. Prototyping & Sample Development:

  • Plan and oversee prototype/sample development for new products.
  • Coordinate with design, toolroom, and production teams to ensure quality output.
  • Validate samples as per customer specifications and revise designs as needed.

3. Tooling & Fixture Development:

  • Guide in the design and development of dies, jigs, and fixtures.
  • Coordinate with toolroom for timely fabrication and trials.

4. Process Planning:

  • Develop and document manufacturing process flows (cutting, bending, welding, etc.).
  • Define process parameters and ensure process stability before SOP (Start of Production).

5. Cost Estimation & BOM Finalization:

  • Prepare cost estimates for new products including material, process, tooling, and manpower.
  • Create and validate Bill of Materials (BOM) in coordination with design and purchase.

Production & Quality Coordination:

6. Pilot Run Management:

  • Plan and monitor pilot batch production to evaluate process and product consistency.
  • Capture and analyze deviations and implement corrective actions.

7. Cross-Functional Team Leadership:

  • Work closely with production, quality, purchase, and sales departments.
  • Facilitate APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning) and PPAP (Production Part Approval Process).

8. Quality Documentation:

  • Ensure DFMEA, PFMEA, Control Plans, and Work Instructions are in place.
  • Coordinate with QA team for dimensional and functional validations.

Project & Customer Management:

9. Project Planning & Tracking:

  • Develop timelines and milestones for product development projects.
  • Use tools like Gantt charts, trackers, or ERP systems to monitor progress.

10. Customer Interaction:

  • Liaise with customers for drawing approvals, product reviews, and feedback.
  • Handle engineering changes and update designs/documentation accordingly.

11. Vendor Development (if outsourced):

  • Identify and develop external vendors for processes not in-house (e.g., powder coating, machining).
  • Ensure vendor quality and delivery compliance.

Continuous Improvement:

12. Process Improvement Initiatives:

  • Identify opportunities to reduce cost, improve quality, or optimize cycle time.
  • Promote design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA).

13. Knowledge Management:

  • Maintain design libraries, process parameters, and project records for future reference.
  • Train junior engineers or interns on NPD processes and standards.
