Accessibility Specialist JD:

Skills-

Knowledge of Standards:

Deep understanding of accessibility standards like WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) and legislation like ADA, ARIA and Section 508.

Assistive Technologies:

Proficiency with assistive technologies such as screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), magnification software, and other tools for testing.

Technical Skills:

Experience using accessibility evaluation tools and understanding of how to implement accessible solutions in digital products(Axe, WAVE).

Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for implementing accessible design and fixes

Collaboration & Communication:

Strong ability to work with designers, developers, and other stakeholders, and to effectively communicate technical information to diverse audiences.

Problem-Solving:

Ability to identify, analyze, and recommend solutions for complex accessibility issues.

Good to have skills:

  1. Trusted tester certification

  2. Ability to lead the team

  3. Understanding of incident management

Key Responsibilities

An Accessibility Specialist should ensure that digital products and services are accessible to individuals with disabilities, providing guidance on accessibility standards and advocating for inclusive design.

Assistive Technology Use: Utilize various assistive technologies like JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and screen magnifiers to identify barriers.

Standard Adherence: Evaluate products against international standards such as WCAG 2.1 (Level A/AA/AAA) and legal requirements like ADA and Section 508.

Accessibility Testing: Conduct comprehensive manual and automated testing of web, mobile, and desktop applications for accessibility compliance. Conduct accessibility evaluations and usability testing to identify areas for improvement in digital products.

Support and Guidance: Provide support, advice, and guidance to teams on creating accessible digital services, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards and regulations.

Training and Education: Develop and deliver training materials for staff on accessibility best practices, ensuring that all team members understand their responsibilities regarding accessibility.

Conduct Accessibility Audits: They perform regular audits and assessments of digital platforms, products, and physical environments to identify barriers to accessibility. This includes evaluating websites, applications, and user interfaces to ensure they meet established accessibility

Documentation: Maintain documentation related to accessibility standards, guidelines, and compliance efforts.

Implement Solutions: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure accessibility is integrated into the development lifecycle and recommend solutions for remediation.
