The Role

South Asia is a burgeoning region for Australian trade and investment, and the role of Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner (STIC) plays an important role in supporting Australia's diversification and growth story. A Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) is in negotiation with India, with an interim free trade agreement in place, delivering strong growth for exporters and new opportunities for investors. A "New Roadmap for Australia's Economic Engagement with India" highlights the economic complementarity for Australia with India. Austrade's work in trade in South Asia focusses on Education, Green Economy, Critical and Enabling Technology, Agribusiness, and Defence, Advanced Manufacturing and Space. Our work in attracting Indian investment from India to Australia focusses on projects aligned with net zero and economic security.

Trade and Investment Framework Agreements are also progressing in the other key markets across the region (Bangladesh and Sri Lanka).

The Austrade team in South Asia is strong in size and capability. A team of 90 working across 8 offices in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are supporting Australian clients to access the region and its opportunities. The team also covers Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives on specific targeted commercial opportunities. As the senior leader of a culturally diverse team, the STIC will be a confident, persuasive leader with a track record of successfully leading teams in complex operating environments, engaging teams to improve performance and delivery.

While reporting to the General Manager, South Asia, the STIC will be expected to work collaboratively across leadership on trade and investment projects and ensure commercial success for our clients. The STIC will take responsibility for delivery on the South Asia Business Exchange, provide oversight to our Project Management Office, coordinate engagement across the region and, leverage the badge of government to establish trusted relationships. The STIC will be a part of the broader Australian Government's senior leadership team working collaboratively with our Consuls General and High Commissioners and their teams (representing various Australian Government Departments) across the region.
