Core responsibilities

  • Blood collection: Perform blood draws, such as venipunctures and finger sticks, from patients of all ages.
  • Patient interaction: Explain the blood draw process to patients, answer questions, and help them feel more comfortable.
  • Sample handling: Accurately label all specimens with patient information, prepare them for transport, and ensure they are delivered to the lab on time.
  • Safety and sanitation: Sterilize equipment, maintain a clean and organized work area, and follow all safety and infection control protocols.
  • Record keeping: Record patient information and update medical records as required.
  • Vital signs: Take vital signs, such as blood pressure, pulse, and respiration readings, before or after drawing blood.
  • Essential skills and qualifications
  • Technical skills: Proficient in blood collection techniques and knowledgeable about safety and infection control standards.
  • Communication skills: Ability to explain procedures clearly and communicate effectively with patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Empathy and composure: Must be patient and empathetic, especially when working with patients who are anxious or have a fear of needles.
  • Attention to detail: Meticulous in labeling samples and following all instructions to ensure accuracy.
  • Physical stamina: Able to stand for long periods and perform tasks efficiently.
