L3 PostgreSQL Database Administrator

Job Summary:

The L3 PostgreSQL Database Administrator is a senior-level role responsible for the design, architecture, and optimization of large-scale PostgreSQL environments. This role includes strategic planning, performance engineering, and leadership in high-availability, disaster recovery, and automation initiatives.

Technical Responsibilities:

Database Architecture Design:

Architect complex PostgreSQL environments, including multi-site replication, sharding, and high-availability clusters.

Design and implement scalable database solutions that support large-scale applications with high transaction volumes.

Strategic Performance Engineering:

Lead the performance tuning and capacity planning initiatives, optimizing both hardware and PostgreSQL configurations.

Implement advanced indexing strategies (e.g., partial indexes, covering indexes) and query optimization techniques.

High Availability & Disaster Recovery:

Design and manage advanced replication setups, including cascading replication, bi-directional replication, and multi-master configurations.

Implement zero-downtime upgrades and seamless failover strategies using tools like PgBouncer, Patroni, and HAProxy.

Security Architecture:

Develop and enforce comprehensive security frameworks, including data encryption, role-based access controls, and auditing.

Implement database security policies aligned with industry standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).

Advanced Troubleshooting & Incident Management:

Lead root cause analysis and resolution of the most complex and critical database issues.

Optimize the entire database stack, from hardware to application integration, to eliminate bottlenecks.

Automation & DevOps Integration:

Drive the automation of database operations through Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines, and advanced scripting.

Develop custom extensions and contribute to PostgreSQL community projects.

Leadership & Mentorship:

Provide technical leadership and mentorship to L1 and L2 DBAs, guiding them on best practices and advanced techniques.

Lead database-related projects and cross-functional teams, driving innovation and best practices across the organization.

R&D and Community Engagement:

Stay updated on the latest PostgreSQL features, tools, and best practices.

Engage with the PostgreSQL community, contribute to open-source projects, and represent the organization at conferences and meetups.

Technical Skills:

PostgreSQL Tools: Expert knowledge of pgAdmin, psql, pgBackRest, Patroni, Barman, pgAudit, and custom extension development.

Operating Systems: Advanced expertise in Linux/Unix systems, including performance tuning and advanced shell scripting.

SQL & PL/pgSQL: Mastery of SQL, PL/pgSQL, and advanced query optimization techniques.

DevOps & Automation: Deep experience with CI/CD pipelines, Terraform, Ansible, Docker, and Kubernetes.

Security: Advanced knowledge of database security, encryption, and compliance standards.
