SENIOR MANAGER – Broadcast Media Engineering

Job Summary
The Chief Engineer – Broadcast Playout leads the engineering team responsible for the planning, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement of broadcast playout systems and infrastructure. This role ensures the highest standards of reliability, quality, and efficiency in delivering broadcast content across multiple channels and platforms. The Chief Engineer will drive innovation, manage technical resources, and oversee all technical troubleshooting and escalation related to playout operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and manage the broadcast playout engineering team, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and support.
• Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of playout infrastructure including servers, automation, signal routing, encoding, and transmission equipment.
• Ensure seamless and uninterrupted broadcast playout with minimal downtime and rapid resolution of technical issues.
• Develop and implement engineering standards, procedures, and best practices to optimize system performance and reliability.
• Collaborate closely with programming, scheduling, and operations teams to align technical capabilities with business needs.
• Monitor system performance metrics and generate reports for senior management to inform strategic decisions.
• Lead disaster recovery planning and ensure robust backup systems are in place for broadcast continuity.
• Coordinate cross-functional projects related to system upgrades, integration of new platforms, or expansion of broadcast services.
• Serve as the technical escalation point for complex playout issues and guide resolution efforts.
• Oversee staff training and development programs to maintain high technical competency.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or master's degree in computer engineering, Broadcast Engineering, Telecommunications, or related technical field.
• Extensive experience (8+ years) in broadcast engineering, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role focused on broadcast playout.
• Deep knowledge of broadcast playout systems and automation platforms (e.g., Imagine Communications, Broadstream, Grass Valley, Harmonic).
• Strong expertise in signal flow, video/audio compression standards, IP broadcast workflows, and transmission technologies.
• Proven track record managing technical teams and complex broadcast operations.
• Excellent problem-solving, decision-making, and project management skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Willingness to work flexible hours including nights and weekends during critical broadcast operations or emergencies.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with cloud-based playout and OTT delivery systems.
• Familiarity with network management and monitoring tools.
• Certifications such as CCNA or equivalent.
• Knowledge of emerging broadcast technologies and industry trends.
