Job Summary:

The Medical Transcriptionist is responsible for listening to voice recordings made by healthcare professionals and converting them into written medical documents. This includes editing drafts prepared by speech recognition software, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and proper medical terminology. The role supports healthcare providers by maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient records.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Listen to and accurately transcribe dictations by physicians and other healthcare providers.

  • Review and edit drafts created by speech recognition software for grammar, clarity, and accuracy.

  • Ensure the correct use of medical terminology, abbreviations, and anatomy.

  • Verify patient information and details for accuracy and completeness.

  • Format reports according to established templates or facility guidelines (e.g., discharge summaries, operative reports, progress notes, consultation reports).

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient records in compliance with HIPAA and other regulations.

  • Collaborate with physicians or healthcare staff to clarify discrepancies or unclear dictations.

  • Meet productivity and quality standards within assigned time frames.

  • Stay updated on new medical terminology, procedures, and transcription technology.

Qualifications:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; postsecondary training in medical transcription preferred.

  • Experience: 1–2 years of experience in medical transcription or related healthcare documentation (preferred but not always required).

  • Certifications: Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) or Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS) is an advantage.

Skills and Competencies:
  • Strong command of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

  • Excellent knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and pharmacology.

  • Proficiency in transcription software, word processing, and electronic health record (EHR) systems.

  • High attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Ability to meet deadlines and maintain confidentiality.

  • Strong listening skills and ability to interpret diverse accents and dictation styles.
