Job Title

Lab HOD – Integrated Steel Plant, Tilda

Job Purpose

Lead the laboratory team for all chemical and physical analysis of raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products to ensure compliance with plant and customer quality standards. Oversee laboratory operations, maintain robust quality control, and ensure regulatory requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage, supervise, and train laboratory staff in the accurate and timely testing of materials (raw, intermediate, and finished steel), ensuring high standards of analysis and reporting.
  • Develop, implement, and update laboratory protocols, SOPs, and safety practices in accordance with industry and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of all laboratory equipment to guarantee reliable test results and uninterrupted operation.
  • Oversee documentation: maintain up-to-date laboratory records, test certificates, and audit trails for traceability.
  • Collaborate with production, quality, and other departments to ensure timely sample analysis and support plant process improvement initiatives.
  • Review and release test reports; assist in root cause analysis for deviations, customer complaints, or product failures.
  • Monitor laboratory inventory, plan purchases for reagents, consumables, and equipment.
  • Drive technical improvement and innovation in laboratory practices, including validation of new test methods and support for R&D projects.
  • Ensure full compliance with plant QHSE, ISO, and statutory norms (e.g., environmental, safety, and quality certifications).

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate/Postgraduate degree in Chemistry, Metallurgy, or related science.
  • 7+ years working experience in laboratory operations within steel, metals, or process industries; at least 2 years in a supervisory/lead position preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of analytical techniques, laboratory equipment, and test standards in steel/metallurgy.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, technical troubleshooting, and organizational skills.

Skills and Attributes

  • Attention to detail and commitment to precise data recording.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and MS Office (Excel, Word).
  • Ability to multitask in a dynamic plant environment and handle high-pressure situations calmly.
  • High devotion to safety, process improvement, and team development.
