Job Description – CSSD Technician

Department: CSSD (Central Sterile Supply Department)

Designation: CSSD Technician

Location: Octavia Hospital, Shivpur, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Reporting To: CSSD Incharge / OT Incharge

1. Job Summary

The CSSD Technician is responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilizing, and distributing surgical instruments, equipment, and medical supplies to ensure patient safety and infection control standards across the hospital.

2. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Cleaning & Decontamination

  • Receive used instruments and equipment from all departments.
  • Perform manual and mechanical cleaning using appropriate detergents and solutions.
  • Ensure proper decontamination of instruments as per protocol.

B. Preparation & Packing

  • Inspect instruments for damage or malfunction.
  • Assemble instrument sets as per checklist.
  • Pack and label instruments, linen, and equipment correctly for sterilization.

C. Sterilization Process

  • Operate sterilization equipment (Autoclave, ETO, Plasma Sterilizer, Washer Disinfector).
  • Maintain correct cycle parameters for each type of load.
  • Ensure proper documentation of sterilization cycles.

D. Storage & Distribution

  • Store sterilized items in a clean and safe environment.
  • Maintain FIFO system (First In, First Out).
  • Supply sterile items to OT, ICU, IPD, and other departments as requested.

E. Record Keeping & Documentation

  • Maintain sterilization logs, BI/CI results, and equipment checklists.
  • Update usage and inventory register.
  • Report any equipment failure or shortage.

F. Infection Control & Safety

  • Follow infection control guidelines and PPE protocols.
  • Handle and dispose biomedical waste as per hospital policy.
  • Participate in training sessions and audits.

3. Skills & Requirements

  • Education: Diploma in CSSD / B.Sc. / Relevant Certification
  • Experience: 3–5 years
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques and instruments
  • Understanding of infection control practices
  • Basic computer and documentation skills
  • Ability to work in shifts, including weekends if required
