Roles & Responsibilities of a Restaurant Manager

1. Operations Management

  • Oversee day-to-day restaurant operations.
  • Ensure consistent food quality, service standards, and cleanliness.
  • Manage opening and closing procedures.
  • Monitor inventory levels and oversee ordering and stock control.
  • Ensure kitchen and dining areas comply with health, safety, and sanitation regulations.

2. Staff Management

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, and train staff (servers, cooks, hosts, etc.).
  • Create and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Supervise and support employees during shifts.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching or disciplinary action when needed.
  • Foster a positive and efficient work environment.

3. Customer Service

  • Ensure excellent guest experience and handle customer complaints or special requests.
  • Engage with customers to build loyalty and gather feedback.
  • Resolve issues quickly to maintain customer satisfaction.

4. Financial Management

  • Monitor daily cash flow, sales, and financial reports.
  • Manage budgets, labor costs, and food costs.
  • Reduce waste and control expenses.
  • Oversee cash handling procedures and bank deposits.

5. Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure compliance with health department regulations, labor laws, and alcohol service laws.
  • Maintain proper licensing (food service, alcohol, business permits).
  • Train staff in safety protocols and emergency procedures.

6. Marketing & Promotion

  • Support marketing efforts, promotions, special events, and loyalty programs.
  • Collaborate on menu updates, pricing strategies, and branding initiatives.
  • Maintain restaurant's online presence (reviews, social media, listings).

7. Leadership & Communication

  • Lead by example with professionalism and strong work ethic.
  • Coordinate between front-of-house (FOH) and back-of-house (BOH) teams.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and communicate policy or menu changes.

8. Quality & Menu Oversight

  • Work with chefs on menu planning, portion control, and seasonal updates.
  • Ensure consistent presentation and taste of menu items.
  • Monitor supplier relationships and negotiate pricing when needed.
