Job Title: Microsoft SQL Server Senior DBA Contractor

Experience Required: Minimum 8 years of experience as a Microsoft SQL Server DBA, with at least 35 years focused on performance tuning and optimization in large-scale, enterprise environments.

Job Summary:

We are looking for a highly skilled Senior Microsoft SQL Server DBA Contractor to join our team for a long-term engagement focused on performance analysis and optimization within a large-scale, multi-tenant environment. The ideal candidate is an expert in SQL Server internals, with deep experience diagnosing and resolving complex performance bottlenecks in high-volume, enterprise-grade systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead comprehensive SQL Server performance audits and identify areas of improvement across production and staging environments.
  • Analyze execution plans, optimize T-SQL queries and stored procedures, and refine indexing strategies to improve overall database efficiency.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve systemic performance issues, including memory grants, tempdb contention, blocking, deadlocks, and I/O latency.
  • Monitor and tune databases supporting multi-terabyte data volumes and high transaction throughput.
  • Manage and optimize linked SQL Server databases and cross-database queries, ensuring minimal latency and efficient distributed transactions.
  • Utilize Query Store, Extended Events, and SQL monitoring tools (such as SentryOne, SolarWinds, or Redgate) for proactive performance tracking and root-cause analysis.
  • Provide architectural guidance for future-state data platform initiatives, including data lakes and data warehouses.
  • Collaborate with development, QA, and infrastructure teams to ensure optimal database design, query efficiency, and scalability.
  • Document tuning efforts, recommendations, and best practices for ongoing maintenance and knowledge sharing.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Deep expertise in Microsoft SQL Server (2016 and above) administration, tuning, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong understanding of SQL Server internals, including query processing, statistics, and indexing behaviour.
  • Proven experience in resolving performance bottlenecks in large-scale, multi-tenant and mission-critical environments.
  • Proficiency in T-SQL optimization, indexing strategies, and query plan analysis.
  • Experience with linked servers, cross-database transactions, and distributed queries.
  • Familiarity with Query Store, Extended Events, Profiler, and third-party monitoring tools.
  • Strong analytical mindset with the ability to interpret complex performance metrics.
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills.

Preferred Skills (Good to Have):

  • Experience with Azure SQL, Azure Synapse Analytics, or other cloud-based analytics platforms.
  • Knowledge of data lake and data warehouse architectures.
  • Understanding of ETL workflows, SSIS, and data integration strategies.
  • Exposure to DevOps pipelines and CI/CD for database deployments.
  • Microsoft SQL Server certification (MCSE, MCSA) or equivalent is an advantage.
