About the Role

As the Head of Engineering at Living Things, you will shape the technology vision and lead the development of scalable, cloud-native, and data-driven systems that power our clean-tech solutions. Youll drive innovation across IoT, AI/ML, and data platforms, enabling real-time insights, automation, and measurable sustainability impact. Beyond building complex systems, you will mentor and grow a world-class engineering team, establish best practices, and foster a culture of ownership and innovation—ensuring Living Things delivers reliable, customer-centric solutions that reduce carbon footprint and transform how businesses consume energy.

Key Responsibilities

• Strategic Technical Leadership:

• Define and own the long-term technology vision and roadmap aligned with business and sustainability goals.

• Enable data-driven decision-making by partnering with the analytics team to design modern data platforms, data lakes, and real-time pipelines.

• Ensure alignment of engineering strategy with business outcomes and environmental impact objectives.

• Building Complex Systems:

• Lead the design and development of large-scale, complex web applications from scratch, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance.

• Drive event-driven architectures and microservices patterns to support real-time analytics and operational workflows.

• Cloud-Native Execution:

• Architect and manage multiple microservices across cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure), leveraging both managed services and self-managed infrastructure.

• Define best practices for data streaming and batch processing pipelines, enabling real-time insights and reporting.

• Analytics Enablement:

• Enable the analytics and data science teams by building robust data infrastructure, including data lakes, ETL pipelines, and real-time dashboards.

• Automate data workflows and operational processes for high efficiency and reliability.

• Collaborate with analytics leadership to ensure data governance, quality, and observability.

• System Architecture & Scalability: Drive decisions that enable modular, distributed systems and event-driven architectures.

• Innovation for Sustainability: Champion adoption of emerging technologies to optimize energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and deliver measurable environmental impact.
• Team Building & Mentorship: Grow, inspire, and lead a high-performing engineering organization spanning backend, frontend, IoT, AI/ML, and data domains.
• Operational Excellence: Establish engineering best practices for CI/CD, testing, monitoring, reliability, and security at scale.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Product, Data Science,

and Operations to deliver customer-centric, mission-driven solutions.

Execution & Delivery: Ensure projects are delivered with high quality and on time, balancing speed of innovation with system stability.

Stakeholder Management: Effectively communicate progress, risks, and strategy to leadership, investors, and external partners.

Culture & Values: Foster a culture of ownership, curiosity, and sustainability within the engineering team.

Preferred Qualifications

• B.Tech degree or a Master's in Computer Science or any other relevant field.
• 8-10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3–5 years in senior leadership roles.
• Proven track record in building complex web applications from scratch and scaling them to production-grade reliability.
• Strong expertise in microservices architecture, including deployment and orchestration across cloud platforms.
• Experience with both managed services and self-managed systems.
• Hands-on proficiency in backend development and frontend frameworks.
• Strong knowledge of databases and distributed systems.
• Exposure to IoT, AI/ML, and big data ecosystems.
• Familiarity with streaming/event-driven technologies.
• Bonus: Experience with infrastructure as code and multi-cloud strategies.

• Leadership:

• Proven ability to build, scale, and lead engineering teams in fast-paced environments.

• Strong decision-making skills balancing deep technical knowledge with business priorities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management across technical and non-technical teams.
