Principal Database Administrator

About our Team

This is a new role where you’ll be part of a squad that is building one of the core data product at Elsevier, enabling researchers/research organizations to showcase/evaluate a individual’s contribution to research and to the society while also capturing the funding/awards that the researcher has received. The data produced by this product is key to proving organizations with powerful discovery and analytics tools in the hands of research/research organizations and supports them in taking informed decisions by combining complex data and visualizing this data in our key analytical products.

We’re looking for a passionate and self-motivated DBA to work as part of our team, helping to give our customers the best possible experience and make our data platform world class.

Your daily work will be basically as follows:

- Working in an agile scrum team that works in a T-shape model to achieve a common goal and delivers value in 2-week sprints.
- Taking advantage of XP techniques such as test-driven development, pair programming and continuous delivery
- Being transparent with the team about project challenges, failures and successes
- Presenting technical proposals to business partners for scrutiny and assessment
- Pair programming with squad members
- Ensuring that software delivery meets the company’s standards with regards to architecture, quality, accessibility, security and privacy
- Ensuring that software has the appropriate level of test coverage at the right level of the test pyramid
- Working in an agile software development environment, supporting the writing and refinement of user stories and tasks

Technical Skills:

- Passion for all aspects of database administration with proven background in supporting databases like Oracle, SQL Server including excellent SQL skills.
- Excellent troubleshooting skills with Oracle database problems, including within PL/SQL programmes.
- Managing Oracle databases on AWS RDS
- Any AWS experience
- Have good experience and exposure to NoSQL databases and would have worked on any of them
- Experience in investigating and resolving performance issues.
- Experience of performing maintenance on databases, including upgrades and patches
- Exposure to databases like Elastic Search, Lucene and Solr is good to have
- Excellent communication skills to ensure clear and concise communication, ensuring that line management and key stakeholders are kept informed of progress, issues and difficulties.
- Have a passion for learning new technologies and be willing to lead research in to new or alternative technologies.
- Reviews and makes recommendations for upgrades or changes to the database environment.
- Engages with technical architects and other senior members of the development teams to provide technical input and guidance as necessary.
