About the Role:
Key Responsibilities:
Cover Design:

- Conceptualize and create eye-catching book covers that align with the genre and target audience.
- Choose typography, colour schemes, imagery, and layout for front, back, and spine.

Interior Layout:

- Design page layouts, including margins, fonts, line spacing, and chapter headings.
- Implement page numbering, running heads, and section breaks.

Typesetting:

- Ensure proper alignment, hyphenation, and spacing for clean, readable text.
- Manage typographic hierarchy (e.g., headings, body text, captions).

Image and Graphic Integration:

- Place illustrations, photographs, charts, and other visual elements appropriately.

Strong Concept Development Skills
- Ability to propose creative and appealing design concepts for individual books as well as book series.

Multiple Design Options Series
- Capable of generating 4-5 distinct design ideas or layouts for each project and presenting them for review and feedback.

Design Understanding
- Should have experience or ability to maintain a consistent visual identity across book series.

Branding Alignment
- Must be able to work within existing brand guidelines and incorporate required branding elements in all design work.

Collaboration and Feedback:

- Work with authors, editors, and publishers to ensure the design matches the book’s vision.
- Revise designs based on feedback.

File Preparation for Publishing:

- Prepare print-ready PDFs following printer specifications (e.g., bleed, trim, and color settings).
- Export digital versions for eBooks if required.

Knowledge and Skills Required:
1. Design Principles:

- Composition, balance, contrast, and white space.
- Understanding of typography, fonts, and readability.

2. Software Proficiency:

- Adobe InDesign
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Affinity Publisher (alternative to InDesign).
- Canva (for simpler projects).

3. Typography:

- Font pairing and hierarchy.
- Kerning, tracking, and leading.

4. Printing Knowledge:

- CMYK vs. RGB color modes.
- Understanding of bleed, trim, and margins.
- Resolution settings

5. Publishing Formats:

- PDF/X for print.
- EPUB and MOBI for digital books.

6. Project Management:

- Time management to meet deadlines.
- Handling revisions and feedback efficiently.

7. Communication Skills:

- Collaborating with clients and teams.
- Presenting and defending design choices.
