**Scrub Nurse Job Description**

A **scrub nurse** (or scrub tech) is a specialized role within the surgical team. The scrub nurse assists during surgeries by managing surgical instruments, maintaining a sterile environment, and ensuring that the surgical procedure runs smoothly.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- **Prepare the Operating Room (OR)**:

- Ensure that the OR is sterile and organized.
- Set up the surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies needed for the procedure.
- **Assist the Surgeon**:

- Hand instruments and materials to the surgeon during surgery.
- Anticipate the surgeon's needs and respond quickly to requests for tools and supplies.
- Maintain the sterile field by monitoring the integrity of drapes, gloves, and instruments.
- **Monitor the Patient**:

- Assist in positioning the patient for surgery.
- Ensure that the patient's safety and comfort are maintained during the procedure.
- **Maintain Sterility**:

- Ensure that all instruments and supplies remain sterile throughout the surgery.
- Properly handle and dispose of used materials to maintain cleanliness.
- **Post-Surgery Responsibilities**:

- Help with the closing of the surgical site.
- Assist with the clean-up of the OR after the surgery is complete.
- Maintain accurate surgical records, including counts of surgical instruments.
- **Collaboration**:

- Work closely with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, and other operating room staff to ensure patient safety and the success of the procedure.

**Skills & Qualifications**:

- **Education**: A nursing degree (RN) or surgical technology certification.
- **Experience**: Previous experience in an operating room or surgical environment is often required.
- **Skills**:

- Knowledge of surgical instruments and procedures.
- Ability to maintain focus and attention to detail under pressure.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Strong understanding of sterile techniques and infection control.

**Work Environment**:

- Scrub nurses work in operating rooms, often in hospitals, surgical centers, or specialty clinics.
- They may work long hours, including nights and weekends, depending on the nature of the surgery and healthcare facility.

**Job Types**: Full-time, Permanent
