Fire Safety Assistant

Org. Setting and Reporting
- These five (5) Positions are located in the Security and Safety Section within the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO). The Fire Safety Assistants will be based in Goma and Bunia and report directly to the Fire Safety Assistant and /or Fire Safety Officer in Goma and Bunia.
- Responsibilities
- Within delegated authority, the Fire Safety Assistants will carry out the following duties: - Conduct inspection and maintenance of MONUSCO fire-fighting equipment, fire hydrants, hose reels, foam inlets, portable fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, and materials as well as ensuring the integrity of all fire safety equipment and materials at MONUSCO sites and report shortcomings. - Ensure that all fire-fighting equipment is in their locations and precautionary signs and notices are in place and not removed. - Extinguish and suppress all fires that may break out within MONUSCO sites using MONUSCO fire-fighting equipment. - Assist in conducting fire investigations to establish causes of fire and make appropriate preventive recommendations for future use. - Carry out surveys at airfields/helipads as per the recommendation of MONUSCO, OIC Fire Unit - Keep records of all fire-fighting equipment and materials at Goma and Bunia, advise chief fire unit MONUSCO on improvement, renewal and replacement of fire-fighting equipment, materials and chemicals whenever required. - Conduct firefighting and building evacuation drills as scheduled and required. - Responds immediately to fires, rescue operations, or other emergencies, including undertaking evacuation of persons and property. - Investigates fire hazards as required for further reporting as necessary. - Ensure that all fire-fighting equipment are in their locations and precautionary signs and notices are in place and not removed. - Ensure that used fire extinguishers are recharged, all fire/exit doors are not locked or obstructed, making regular inspection of all emergency exit doors, routes, walkways, and other passageways safe and smooth for movement at all times. - Carry out any other duties as directed by FSO/OIC Fire Unit, MONUSCO.
- Competencies
- Education
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A valid driving license for heavy-duty trucks with safe driving records is required. Basic technical/vocational training and a certificate/Diploma in firefighting from a recognized institution are an advantage.

- Work Experience
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience in firefighting duties, on-the-job training, and firefighting is required Experience in driving fire trucks is required. A valid professional heavy truck driving license is required. A technical/vocational training and a certificate in firefighting from a recognized institution is desirable.
- Languages
- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
