Job Description: A Mainframe Consultant is responsible for driving the migration of legacy mainframe systems to modern cloud or distributed environments.
This role requires a blend of deep technical expertise in both mainframe systems and modern platforms, as well as leadership skills to manage migration teams and coordinate with various stakeholders.
The ideal candidate is experienced in migration strategies, has hands-on development expertise, technical leadership, and coordination with cross-functional teams to ensure a seamless migration process and is capable of troubleshooting complex migration-related issues to ensure the successful transformation of legacy systems.
Key Responsibilities: • Migration Planning and Strategy: ➢ Lead the technical planning and execution of mainframe migration projects, ensuring alignment with business goals and technical requirements.
➢ Develop detailed migration strategies, including re-platforming, re-hosting, and re-architecting solutions for mainframe applications and data.
➢ Collaborate with business stakeholders and IT leadership to define migration objectives, timelines, and risk management plans.
• Hands-On Development and Migration: ➢ Analyze, refactor, and re-engineer legacy mainframe applications (COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2) for migration to cloud or distributed platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, microservices architectures).
➢ Develop or adapt APIs, microservices, and other interfaces to integrate mainframe systems with modern platforms.
➢ Plan and execute data migration strategies, ensuring data integrity and accuracy throughout the process.
➢ Oversee data migration efforts, ensuring accurate data mapping, transformation, and validation during the migration process.
• Technical Leadership: ➢ Lead a team of developers in executing the migration strategy, providing hands-on guidance and mentoring.
➢ Coordinate development efforts between mainframe and modern platform teams to ensure seamless system integration post-migration.
➢ Ensure that best practices, coding standards, and performance optimization techniques are followed throughout the migration process.
• Application Modernization: ➢ Lead the modernization of mainframe applications using appropriate technologies and frameworks, ensuring compliance with industry best practices.
• Performance and Optimization: ➢ Perform detailed analysis of the performance of migrated applications and systems, ensuring they meet performance, security, scalability, and availability requirements.
➢ Identify and address performance bottlenecks, compatibility issues, or other challenges during and after migration.
➢ Conduct testing (including unit testing, integration testing, and performance testing) to ensure the success of the migration.
• Collaboration and Communication: ➢ Work closely with cross-functional teams including business analysts, cloud architects, infrastructure teams, and project managers to align migration efforts with business and technical objectives.
➢ Provide regular updates on migration progress, including risks, challenges, and successes, to both technical teams and senior management.
➢ Facilitate communication between mainframe and cloud/distributed teams to ensure smooth knowledge transfer and collaboration.
• Team Management and Execution: ➢ Coordinate with project managers and other stakeholders to ensure that migration projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the desired quality standards.
• Risk Management and Troubleshooting: ➢ Identify potential risks related to the migration process, including technical, operational, and business risks, and develop mitigation strategies.
➢ Troubleshoot and resolve migration-related issues, including application performance problems, data consistency issues, or integration challenges.
• Post-Migration Support: ➢ Provide post-migration support to ensure system stability and performance.
➢ Work with operational teams to establish long-term maintenance and support strategies for the new environment.
Key Skills and Qualifications: • Technical Expertise: ➢ Extensive experience with mainframe systems including COBOL, JCL, CICS, DB2, VSAM, and other relevant mainframe tools and technologies.
➢ Strong understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and distributed systems, including microservices architectures, containers (Docker, Kubernetes), and APIs.
➢ Proven experience with mainframe migration projects, including strategies such as re-platforming, refactoring, re-hosting, and data migration.
➢ Familiarity with modern programming languages such as Java, Python, Scala and experience integrating them with mainframe systems.
• Migration Tools and Methodologies: ➢ Experience using mainframe migration tools (e.g., Micro Focus, Rocket Software, Blue Phoenix, Cloud Frame).
➢ Understanding of data migration and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and tools for moving data between environments.
➢ Knowledge of Dev Ops tools (e.g., Jenkins, Ansible, Terraform) and practices for automating deployment and testing in modern environments.
• Leadership and Team Management: ➢ Proven leadership experience in managing teams of developers and technical staff, preferably within mainframe migration or modernization projects.
➢ Strong ability to coach and mentor team members through complex technical challenges, particularly during the migration process.
• Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: ➢ Ability to analyze and resolve complex technical issues related to mainframe applications and systems during migration.
➢ Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills, especially for identifying and resolving performance or integration issues.
• Communication and Collaboration: ➢ Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
➢ Experience working in a collaborative environment, leading cross-functional teams, and working with vendors and third-party service providers.
Preferred Experience: ➢ 10+ years of experience working with mainframe systems and technologies.
➢ 4+ years of experience in leading mainframe migration or modernization projects.
➢ Experience in migrating legacy systems to cloud platforms or distributed architectures.
➢ Experience working with hybrid cloud environments, integrating mainframe systems with modern cloud technologies.
➢ Proven experience as a Mainframe Migration Lead Developer or a similar role.
➢ Strong understanding of mainframe technologies, including COBOL, JCL, DB2, and IMS.
➢ Expertise in modern programming languages and frameworks (e.g., Java, Python, Scala).
➢ Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud-native technologies.
➢ Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
➢ Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
➢ Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
➢ Experience with API development and integration.
Education and Certifications: • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• Relevant mainframe certifications (e.g., IBM z/OS Certified, COBOL, DB2 certification).
• Certifications in cloud technologies (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, Azure Architect, Google Cloud Professional) are highly desirable.
• Experience or certifications in Agile and Dev Ops practices is a plus.
• Health Care domain experience is a plus.
