Climate Adaptation Specialist

We are seeking a Climate Adaptation Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our climate adaptation team, you will play a critical role in helping us develop and implement effective climate adaptation strategies.

Your primary responsibility will be to work with national governments, civil society, and other stakeholders to integrate climate adaptation priorities into their national climate frameworks. You will conduct Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessments (CVRAs) across various sectors, including agriculture, water, health, biodiversity, and coastal ecosystems. This involves identifying areas of high vulnerability and developing actionable strategies to address them.

In addition to CVRAs, you will apply climate models and risk analytics to inform strategic planning and prioritization of adaptation responses. You will also identify and size adaptation measures, considering multiple scenarios and uncertainties. Your expertise in techno-commercial analysis, cost estimation, and financing pathways will be essential in evaluating the feasibility of proposed interventions and securing funding for climate adaptation initiatives.

You will have a strong understanding of climate finance mechanisms, such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and bilateral donor programs. Effective communication and facilitation skills are also crucial for success in this role, as you will need to engage government agencies, civil society, youth, women, and vulnerable groups in the adaptation process.

• Integrate adaptation priorities into national climate frameworks, ensuring alignment with the Paris Agreement and national development goals.
• Conduct CVRAs across sectors such as agriculture, water, health, biodiversity, and coastal ecosystems to identify areas of high vulnerability.
• Apply climate models and risk analytics to inform strategic planning and prioritization of adaptation responses, considering multiple scenarios and uncertainties.
• Identify and size adaptation measures with clear outcomes, implementation timelines, and cost estimates to ensure effective resource allocation.
• Evaluate techno-commercial feasibility of proposed interventions and map relevant financing sources to secure funding for climate adaptation initiatives.
• Support the preparation of funding proposals for climate adaptation, including those targeting GCF, GEF, and other international mechanisms, to leverage external resources.
• Foster inclusive stakeholder consultations, engaging government agencies, civil society, youth, women, and vulnerable groups to ensure that all voices are heard and valued in the adaptation process.

To be successful in this role, you will require:

• An advanced degree in climate science, environmental studies, sustainable development, natural resource management, or a related field.
• A minimum of 5 years of experience in climate adaptation, resilience planning, or a related field is required, with a proven track record of delivering results.
• Experience working on developing or updating Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategies (LT-LEDS), or National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), particularly in developing country contexts, is highly desirable.
• Proficiency in conducting CVRAs and translating findings into actionable strategies is crucial, as is the ability to communicate complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience working with climate models and interpreting risk projections is necessary, as is a strong grasp of techno-commercial analysis, cost estimation, and financing pathways.
• Familiarity with climate finance mechanisms such as the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and bilateral donor programs is an asset.
• Effective communication, analytical thinking, and facilitation skills are essential for success in this role.
