Electrical Design Lead

The role of an Electrical Design Lead is to oversee the daily operations and performance of the electrical engineering team. They play a crucial role in motivating the team and ensuring their success.

They are responsible for communicating project goals, safety practices, and deadlines with designated teams. Additionally, they are involved in planning and forecasting budgets and timelines to ensure project completion according to schedule.

  • Key Responsibilities:
  • Design of electrical systems at Railway Stations (above and below ground) through all design stages from concept to detailed design.
  • Design of low voltage reticulation and distribution systems (230/400Volt) including UPS sources.
  • Design of general lighting systems and emergency lighting systems.
  • Design of cable management systems (CMS) including trunking, tray, and conduits and the preparation of CMS sizing calculations and self-checking and presentation of results.
  • Operation of AMTECH / Electrical OM software to produce design for low voltage systems including selection of cable types, protective devices and self-checking and presentation of results.
  • Prepare user requirements, technical specifications, design specifications, and commissioning plans.
  • Provide technical guidance in planning and executing assigned projects.
  • Supervise and verify the work performed by the designers/modeller to meet the requirements of the project.
  • Liaise with stakeholders to estimate the budget and time associated with the projects within the area of expertise.
  • Ensure the compatibility of the Electrical discipline with other disciplines involved in the projects.
  • Create a healthy and motivating work environment and atmosphere.
  • Develop a well-designed evaluation program.
  • Responsible for overseeing all activities within a team.
  • Manage a team and manage employee development, employee appraisal, and staff development etc.
  • Identify team goals, evaluate team progress, and resolve conflict.
Qualifications and Technical Experience
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering.
  • Experience of 7+ years working with electrical design.
  • Qualifications meeting the requirements for Chartership with a UK Engineering Institution.
  • Qualifications in BS7671 (e.g. City & Guilds Requirements for Electrical Installations).
  • Extensive experience of working within a rail station environment and good working knowledge of Network Rail, TfL, and LUL standards.
  • Experience of contributing to the electrical design on multidisciplinary projects and knowledge of rail design assurance processes.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of the requirements necessary to develop and progress projects through the early stages of the lifecycle – LUL, GRIP, and RIBA.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
