Key Database Engineer Role

Job Overview

As a Key Member of the Engineering Team, you will ensure that databases are performant, reliable, scalable, and automated. You will partner with cross-functional engineers across various use cases, analyze database performance, and provide optimizations.

You will also help run zero-downtime upgrades and maintenance as Motive reaches 99.99% SLAs.

Responsibilities
  1. Design high-availability database architecture using cloud-based services.
  2. Partner with developers and SREs to build and automate infrastructure provisioning.
  3. Continuously monitor and improve database performance via query and index tuning, schema updates, partitioning, etc.
  4. Collaborate with developers to optimize database queries.
  5. Work on data flows from main DBs to Kafka and Snowflake.
  6. Deploy Terraform configurations for database instances, users, groups, and permissions.
  7. Manage database upgrades and migrations with minimal downtime.
  8. Take on-call duty to respond to production incidents.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Overall 5 years of experience, 3 years working with PostgreSQL 9.6.
  • Experience building mission-critical production databases.
  • Solid understanding of database architecture, locking, consistency, transaction logging, etc.
  • AWS managed services experience (Aurora, etc.).
  • Advanced knowledge of query tuning and optimization techniques.
  • Provisioning experience with PostgreSQL databases in AWS using Terraform, CloudFormation, Ansible.
  • Monitoring and logging experience with Datadog, New Relic, Sumo Logic.
  • Experience with other databases like DynamoDB, Redshift, Elasticsearch, Snowflake is beneficial.
