Senior Underwriter Job Description

As a Senior Underwriter, you will play a pivotal role in reviewing mortgage files submitted to underwriting. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting a thorough review of mortgage loan files, including income, assets, credit, and collateral.
  • Utilizing the client's loan operating system to ensure accurate data entry.
  • Underwriting loans in accordance with client guidelines, utilizing automated underwriting systems or manual guidelines as necessary.
  • Evaluating and ensuring overall loan documents are accurate, complete, and compliant.
  • Identifying and clearing red flags or alerts.
  • Issuing loan decisions and conditions accordingly.
  • Reviewing and approving conditions for compliance and completion of loan files.
  • Providing excellent customer service to internal and external clients.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of client and investor requirements.
  • Resolving pre- and post-closing issues related to underwriting.
  • Assisting Processors/Loan Officers in understanding underwriting decisions and conditions.

This position requires a strong sense of urgency, ability to work in a team environment, and maintain excellent organizational, communication, and PC skills.

Requirements and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must have:

  • Minimum 2+ years of current conventional mortgage loan underwriting experience.
  • Strong knowledge of income calculations, tax returns, reading credit reports, identifying red flags.
  • Basic knowledge of appraisal and ability to recognize red flags and ineligible properties.
  • Thorough working knowledge of GSE underwriting guidelines and automated underwriting engines (DU/LP).
  • Strong analytic, interpersonal, and verbal and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong ability to time manage.
  • Ability to work in a flexible and production-oriented environment.
  • Must be willing and able to work as part of a team.
  • Strong capability to work in multiple systems - paperless environment.
  • Must be willing to work in strict security environment.
  • NMLS-MLO Licensure preferred.
  • Candidates must be available to work outside of normal business hours when necessary.
