Process Design Engineer Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Process Design Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing and optimizing process flow chemistry and batch processes for scale-up and commercial manufacturing.

This is an exciting opportunity for a driven engineer to work on high-impact projects within a globally distributed pharma project team. You will have the chance to grow your skills and knowledge while working with cross-functional teams to ensure robust process design.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop flow chemistry and batch processes for scale-up and commercial manufacturing.
  • Perform process design calculations including heat and mass balance, reaction kinetics, equipment sizing, pressure drop, mixing and scale-up parameters.
  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables such as block flow diagrams (BFDs), process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Support process safety assessments including HAZOP, risk analysis and safety studies.
  • Collaborate with process chemists, mechanical, instrumentation and analytical teams to ensure robust process design.
  • Evaluate new technologies and propose innovative solutions for continuous manufacturing and flow chemistry applications.
  • Provide process engineering support during pilot plant and commercial scale-up.
  • Work with procurement and vendors for equipment selection and specification preparation.
  • Ensure compliance with GMP, regulatory guidelines and EHS standards in process design.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's/Master's degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5-7 years of experience in process design engineering within the pharmaceutical/chemical industry.
  • Hands-on expertise in flow chemistry and batch process design.
  • Strong knowledge of process design tools and calculations including heat/mass transfer, reaction engineering and hydraulics.
  • Experience in preparing and interpreting BFDs, PFDs and P&IDs.
  • Proficiency in simulation software such as Aspen Plus, ChemCAD or equivalent.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and project management skills.
  • Knowledge of process safety including HAZOP, LOPA and FMEA is desirable.
