Climate Adaptation Specialist Role

This role involves the integration of adaptation priorities into national climate frameworks to ensure alignment with the Paris Agreement and national development goals.

The Climate Adaptation Specialist will be responsible for conducting Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessments (CVRAs) across sectors such as agriculture, water, health, biodiversity, and coastal ecosystems.

The specialist will apply climate models and risk analytics to inform strategic planning and prioritization of adaptation responses.

Key responsibilities include identifying and sizing adaptation measures with clear outcomes, implementation timelines, and cost estimates.

The specialist will evaluate techno-commercial feasibility of proposed interventions and map relevant financing sources.

The role also involves supporting the preparation of funding proposals for climate adaptation, including those targeting GCF, GEF, and other international mechanisms.

Facilitating inclusive stakeholder consultations, engaging government agencies, civil society, youth, women, and vulnerable groups is a crucial aspect of this role.

Aligning adaptation strategies with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national development plans is another key responsibility.

The specialist will contribute to the design of Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems in line with Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF) requirements.

Drafting technical content for reports, presentations, and policy briefs tailored to diverse audiences is an essential part of this role.

The specialist will provide policy recommendations that strengthen climate resilience and adaptation integration.

Collaborating with public and private sector stakeholders to support implementation and resource mobilization is a critical component of this role.

  • Required Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree in climate science, environmental studies, sustainable development, natural resource management, or related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in climate adaptation, resilience planning, or related fields
  • Demonstrated involvement in developing or updating NDCs, LT-LEDS, or NAPs, particularly in developing country contexts
  • Proficiency in conducting CVRAs and translating findings into actionable strategies
  • Experience working with climate models and interpreting risk projections
  • Strong grasp of techno-commercial analysis, cost estimation, and financing pathways
  • Familiarity with climate finance mechanisms such as GCF, GEF, and bilateral donor programs
  • Effective communication, analytical thinking, and facilitation skills
  • Exposure to UNFCCC reporting processes (BUR, TNC, BTR) is an advantage

  • Prior experience supporting national governments in climate strategy development
  • Background in climate and sustainability consulting or advisory roles
  • Knowledge of ecosystem-based adaptation, nature-based solutions, and coastal resilience approaches
  • Ability to integrate gender and social inclusion into adaptation planning
  • Skilled in translating technical analysis into policy guidance and investment strategies
