Job Description

We are seeking an experienced senior database administrator to lead our team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in database administration and management, with a focus on ensuring the reliability, performance, and scalability of our database infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement best practices for supported datastores (primarily MySQL and PostgreSQL) to ensure high-quality database services.
  • Analyze solutions and implement best practices for database security, backup, and recovery to minimize risks and maximize efficiency.
  • Collaborate with application teams to develop solutions that integrate seamlessly with our database systems, ensuring smooth business operations.
  • Develop and enforce best practices for database observability and ensure we reach our database objectives through data-driven insights.
  • Provide database expertise to engineering teams through reviews of database migrations, queries, and performance optimizations, enhancing overall system performance.
  • Collaborate with peers to roll out changes to our production environment and help mitigate database-related production incidents, minimizing downtime and ensuring high availability.
  • Design and implement automation of database infrastructure to support self-service tools for engineering teams, improving productivity and reducing manual errors.
  • Support and debug database production issues across services and levels of the stack, providing timely resolutions to critical issues.
  • Document all actions to turn learnings into repeatable actions and automate them, ensuring knowledge sharing and process improvement.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • A minimum of 4-8 years of experience running MySQL/PostgreSQL databases in large environments, with a proven track record of success.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, including AWS/GCP, to leverage scalable and secure solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of the internals of MySQL/PostgreSQL, enabling effective optimization and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with load balancing solutions like ProxySQL to distribute database traffic efficiently across multiple servers, ensuring high performance and uptime.
  • Knowledge of tools and methods for monitoring database performance, allowing for proactive issue resolution.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment, adapting to changing requirements and priorities.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within cross-functional teams, fostering a culture of cooperation and mutual support.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Knowledge of caching mechanisms, such as Redis or Elasticache, to enhance database performance and reduce latency.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages, particularly Python, to automate tasks and improve productivity.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation tools, including Terraform or Ansible, to streamline deployment and management processes.
