The Privacy Counsel role is crucial to our success, responsible for safeguarding our growing business and protecting student data globally. This counsel focuses on U.S. laws and supports global operations, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations through AI governance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic legal guidance on various privacy and data protection issues, including U.S. federal and state laws, international laws, compliance obligations, AI, and data privacy in contracts.
  • Develop and implement our global data protection and privacy program in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to deliver subject matter expertise, advice, and training related to data protection legal and compliance obligations.
  • Assist with and monitor compliance with company data protection and privacy policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Raise awareness and create effective training and guidance to promote best practices and drive a data protection and privacy-oriented culture.
  • Support customer conversations as they apply to data protection, privacy, and AI, and assist with vendor contract diligence.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • A comprehensive understanding of global data protection and privacy laws, with an emphasis on U.S. state and federal student data privacy laws and best practices.
  • Expertise in advising on complex data protection and privacy matters, particularly related to FERPA, COPPA, GDPR, etc.
  • The ability to work cross-functionally with lawyers and non-lawyers to establish effective solutions efficiently and amicably.
  • Build trust, emphasize collaboration and communication, and serve as a connector between business and legal teams.
  • Translate legal advice into actionable guidance for stakeholders, often in line with prescribed timelines.
  • Apply risk-balanced, practical legal guidance to complex data protection and privacy questions, creative problem-solving, and solution-finding skills, and agility and flexibility in an evolving environment.
  • Maintain confidentiality to the utmost degree.
  • Take independent action and calculated risks while asking for help as needed.
  • Balance team and individual responsibilities while contributing to a positive working environment.
Requirements:
  • An LLB or Juris Doctor from an accredited law school
  • Enrollment with a State Bar Council under the Bar Council of India and/or passing the All-India Bar Examination, and/or membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
