Portfolio Management Opportunities

Eligibility criteria for Portfolio Management registration with SEBI include:

  • The applicant must be a body corporate entity.
  • The applicant should possess necessary infrastructure, including office space, equipment, and personnel.
  • The applicant shall appoint a compliance officer.
  • The principal officer of the applicant must have:
  • A professional qualification in law, finance, accountancy, business management, or completion of CFA.
  • At least five years of experience in related activities within the securities market, encompassing roles such as portfolio manager, stock broker, investment adviser, research analyst, or fund manager.

In addition to these requirements, at least two years of relevant experience must be in portfolio management or investment advisory services, or in areas related to fund management.

  • Obtaining NISM XXI-B certification is mandatory.
    • Apart from the principal officer and compliance officer, the applicant must employ at least one person with a graduate degree and at least two years of experience in related activities within the securities market, including portfolio management, stock brokerage, investment advising, research analysis, or fund management. If this individual serves as a fund manager, they must possess the same qualifications, experience, and certifications as the principal officer.
    • The applicant must meet capital adequacy requirements, ensuring a minimum net worth of Rs. 5 crores.
    • Net worth calculations involve paid-up equity capital plus free reserves (excluding revaluation reserves), minus accumulated losses and deferred expenditure not written off.
    • Net worth requirements for PMS activities must be separate and independent from other regulatory capital adequacy requirements.
    • Applicants, their directors, principal officers, compliance officers, or employees cannot be involved in litigation or convicted of offenses involving moral turpitude.
    • The applicant must be considered a 'fit and proper person' according to Schedule II of the SEBI (Intermediaries) Regulations, 2008.
    • The grant of a certificate to the applicant is in the interest of investors.
    • Application Form A must be filed with SEBI, accompanied by a fee structure consisting of application fees, registration fees, and renewal fees to maintain registration.
