Job Description

As a Backend Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in the development of our next-generation AI-powered Search & Engagement platform.

This cutting-edge platform aims to revolutionize static search by providing users with tailored 'swimlanes' of content, recommendations, and engagement features.

You will work closely with architects, frontend developers, and AI/ML engineers to design and implement the APIs, data flows, and integrations on AWS that power this platform.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining backend services on AWS (Lambda, API Gateway) for search, feedback, tasks, and analytics.
  • Implementing search and retrieval features in OpenSearch (keyword + vector search, ranking).
  • Creating pipelines to enrich content with tags, lay terms, and related data.
  • Capturing user interaction signals (clicks, ratings, dwell time) and processing them for re-ranking and analytics.
  • Developing and documenting APIs for use by web, iOS, and Android clients.

The successful candidate will ensure performance targets (e.g., < 2.5s retrieval time) and compliance standards are met while collaborating daily with frontend, DevOps, and product teams in an agile environment.

Required Skills and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Solid experience building backend services with AWS (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, Kinesis).
  • Hands-on knowledge of OpenSearch/Elasticsearch (indexing, search queries).
  • Experience designing and scaling APIs (REST/GraphQL, OpenAPI).
  • Familiarity with event-driven architectures and basic data pipelines.
  • Proficiency in at least one backend language (Python or Node.js preferred).
  • Understanding of secure coding practices; exposure to compliance-sensitive environments (HIPAA/PII is a plus).
