Senior Design Professional

Key to success in this role is the ability to work as part of a team to support project delivery. Under the supervision of a senior or project engineer, key responsibilities include:

Responsibilities

• Prepare feasibility study reports meeting brief requirements and review with the Head of Structures.
• Work with the WSP Team to assemble a design specification compliant with employer requirements, agree its format and content, and monitor and review its preparation ensuring delivery by the due date.
• Agree and monitor scope of works with the Head of Structures.
• Clearly define building requirements and purpose of use with the Head of Structures and WSP Team to allow detailed design.
• Carry out detailed design to WSP and B Regulations standard ensuring CDM, QA and technical review and sign off by the Head of Structures, including complex calculations and coordination issues.
• Review and monitor production of calculations including QA, technical reviews and sign off.
• Ensure information for project costing preparation is completed in requisite detail and to deadlines, and keep the WSP Team informed regarding design progress through explanation of design decisions.
• Provide documentary information via the WSP Team to assist in tender document preparation, ensuring information for tender preparation is completed in requisite detail and to deadlines, and keep the WSP Team informed regarding design progress through explanation of design decisions.
• Co-ordinate project contracts documents (drawings and specifications) and reviews input from team members.
• Deal with day-to-day queries from the WSP Team, ensuring relevant information is available on time for construction activity.
• Report any variance between constructed works and design intent to the WSP Team and Head of Structures.
• Project manage commissions from the WSP Team using applicable project management tools.
• Lead the design process and encourage team members to deliver appropriate and cost-effective solutions to agreed programmes.
• Follow document control, archiving CDM and QA processes relevant to project work, ensuring drawings, specifications, reports and correspondence are issued and filed appropriately, coaching junior staff in usage.

• Contribute to concept design and undertake technical reviews.
• Provide feedback on effectiveness of protocols and processes in place, aiming for continuous improvement.
• Develop positive professional relationships with the WSP Team, communicating openly about project progress.
• Participate in team meetings, disseminate information within the team, and communicate with other teams.
• Identify and act on potential risk issues, referring where necessary, and follow commercial and contracting processes.
• Manage delegated tasks to ensure deadlines are met, flagging resourcing concerns to team leaders.
• Flag additional fees and scope agreed with the Head of Structures.
• Complete timesheets accurately ahead of weekly deadlines.

Key Competencies/Skills Required:

Mandatory Skills

• Proven experience in designing Building Structures, ideally with significant experience in a similar role or a good track record.
• Good presentation skills are required.
• Must be fully conversant with structural software such as RAM, CSC, ETABS and SAFE.
• A sound understanding of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and Project is essential.
• Must be fluent in English with an excellent understanding of technical terminology.

Desired Skills

• Demonstrate good management, communication and technical skills, capable of working both independently and within the team, as dictated by workload.

Qualifications

• British Chartered Engineer status or equivalent is ideal, along with a degree in Civil or Structural Engineering and membership to an accredited engineering body, with 14+ years of experience.
