Teaching Music to Differently Abled Students

The school aims to provide a supportive and inclusive environment for children and adults with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome.

We are seeking a qualified music teacher to join our team of special educators and therapists. The ideal candidate will have experience working with learners with multiple disabilities and be passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and adults with special needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and Deliver Lessons: Design and implement music lessons that accommodate varying learning styles and abilities, including students with autism, physical disabilities, learning difficulties, or emotional/behavioural challenges.
  • Use Adaptive Techniques: Utilise assistive technologies, visual aids, instruments, and alternative communication methods to support student participation.
  • Encourage Expression and Communication: Promote music as a means of self-expression, communication, and emotional regulation.
  • Therapeutic Integration: Collaborate with occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other specialists to integrate therapeutic goals into musical activities.
  • Assessment and Reporting: Assess student progress using tailored benchmarks; maintain accurate records and contribute to IEPs (Individualised Education Programs).
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a safe, structured, and encouraging classroom environment; manage behaviour sensitively in line with the school's positive behaviour support policies.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's or P.G Diploma in Carnatic/Hindustani Music, Certificate course in Music Therapy (preferred)
  • 3 to 7 years of working with children in a mainstream school/ Special school
  • Teaching qualification or experience in special education (Preferred)
  • Experience working with children with special educational needs (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of inclusive teaching strategies and adaptive music education
  • Ability to play an instrument and facilitate group music singing 
  • Must know Light songs and Bhajans in Tamil
  • Knowledge of Tamil language is mandatory
  • Training in music therapy or knowledge of therapeutic music practices
  • Experience with communication aids
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Patience, creativity, and a positive attitude
