Job Description

As a Senior Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in creating project deliverables related to power system protection and control (P&C) for transmission and distribution, renewable (onshore & offshore wind/solar), BESS projects.

  • Develop project proposals, including conceptual designs and execution plans.
  • Generate engineering cost and man-hour estimates, as well as schedules.
  • Lead technical roles on P&C design project deliverables, ranging from 11kV up to 400kV, with a focus on voltages above 132kV.
  • Produce detailed electricity substation P&C design packages compliant with required client and technical standards.
  • Design protection and control systems, including panel arrangements, single-line diagrams, AC schematics, DC elementaries, equipment wiring, and circuit diagrams.
  • Prepare calculations and reports for engineering studies, such as voltage drop analysis and load studies.
  • Develop equipment specifications for procurement and/or factory acceptance testing.
  • Coordinate design activities across departments, including Civil/Structural, Networks, and Transmission Line.
  • Conduct design reviews, participate in virtual meetings, and collaborate closely with clients.
  • Review designs, participate in virtual meetings, and collaborate with clients.
  • Coordinate with team members and monitor project schedules to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Work with the UK Engineering Team to enable effective collaboration on multi-disciplinary projects and facilitate an optimal engineering function in the UK business.
  • Drive a 'Safety by Design' approach on all projects.
  • Coordinate design activities with the WSP UK Office.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members.
  • Develop and enhance processes, tools, and potentially implement new technologies into the design process.
  • Conduct periodic quality checks for other engineers and designers.
  • Exhibit ingenuity, foresight, and wise decision-making skills in resolving challenges.
  • Contribute to the progress and growth of departmental tools and workflows aimed at improving design processes, specification development, and project implementation.
Required Skills and Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Have between 10 and 15 years of experience in substation transmission and distribution, renewable (onshore & offshore wind/solar), BESS projects.
  • Thorough knowledge and experience applying National Grids Technical Specification, Technical Guidance Notes, and Design Handbooks relating to substation protection & control in the UK.
  • Membership in a relevant professional Engineering Institution is preferred.
  • Possess a strong knowledge of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Experience in onshore wind, offshore wind, renewable (solar) and BESS projects is preferred.
  • Exhibit excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capable of working methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment, demonstrating critical thinking skills.
  • Proficient in utilizing standard engineering techniques and procedures.
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrates diligence, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with the basics of Substation automation system based on IEC61850 is valuable.
  • Additional assets include familiarity with relay testing and control/protection scheme testing, and proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical and Substation 3D Design suites.
