Senior Backend Architect

Job Description:

We seek a seasoned Backend Architect to lead the development of our existing backend system and mentor junior engineers.

This high-impact role requires technical expertise, strong leadership, and a hands-on approach. The ideal candidate balances architectural decisions with code-level contributions, mentors junior developers, and ensures the team follows best practices.

  • Leads design and development efforts for new features, systems integrations, and refactoring projects.
  • Coordinates with cross-functional teams including frontend, DevOps, QA, and product.
  • Manages the technical backlog, prioritizes tasks, and ensures timely delivery.
Team Mentorship & Code Quality:

The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding and mentoring junior and mid-level developers, providing code reviews, feedback, and technical leadership.

Establishes and enforces coding standards, design principles, and software engineering best practices.

  • Promotes a culture of continuous improvement, clean code, and ownership.
  • Conducts regular 1:1s and provides growth opportunities to the team.
Backend Development & Architecture:

Designs and develops scalable, maintainable backend solutions using Node.js, Express.js, JavaScript, and TypeScript.

Works with both SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB, Redis) databases.

  • Builds and optimizes RESTful APIs and GraphQL services.
  • Architects and works with monolithic and microservices architectures, with experience in de-coupled and domain-driven design.
  • Implements secure authentication and authorization solutions (e.g., OAuth2, JWT).
  • Improves system performance, scalability, and observability.
Process & Collaboration:

Collaborates with the product team to translate requirements into technical solutions.

Owns and maintains CI/CD pipelines and development workflows.

  • Drives sprint planning, estimation, and retrospectives with agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban).
  • Communicates technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • 8+ years in backend development with strong experience in Node.js, Express, JavaScript, and TypeScript.
  • Proficient in database design and management (SQL and NoSQL).
  • Proven experience with monolithic to microservices transition, API design (REST & GraphQL), and secure authentication systems.
  • Strong understanding of clean code principles, SOLID, DRY, and test-driven development (TDD).
  • Experience with architectural patterns: Event-driven architecture, de-coupled systems, and service-oriented design.
  • Proficiency with Git, CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, etc.), Docker, and deployment workflows.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) and infrastructure as code is a plus.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior experience leading and growing engineering teams.
  • Experience with performance tuning, observability (logs, metrics, tracing), and scalability.
  • Exposure to serverless architectures and container orchestration (Kubernetes, ECS).
  • Background in startup environments or greenfield projects is a plus.
