Job Title: Head IP

Educational Qualifications: A graduate or postgraduate degree in a field related to Engineering (Mechanical, Electronics, Automotive, Material Science) is required.

Additional Qualifications: WON, WIPO DL101, DFSS, and Qualified Patent Agent Exam will be advantageous.

Experience: 18+ years of experience are necessary.

Purpose of the Role:

  • Review new product designs for potential Intellectual Property legal risks, plan IP checks, carry out risk mitigation, and strengthen the technology/NPD culture through IP.
  • Develop search strategies and conduct search analysis for Freedom-to-Operate (FTO), Statement of Assumptions (SOA), invalidation, opposition, and litigation purposes.
  • Perform advanced technology analysis including competitive intelligence analysis, Design IP protection of transportation design & engineering across business clusters.

Role Description:

  1. Drive the Intellectual Property culture, review designs for IP-related issues, and initiate actions to de-risk designs/products (current and future).
  2. Perform advanced patent/competitor portfolio analysis for patent literature as well as non-patent literature, leverage tools like IT/data analytics for effective search and analysis of IP.
  3. Conduct state-of-the-art analysis as required, work closely with IP attorneys/legal associates, and close IP FTO opinion reports in a timely manner. Review and recommend FTO decisions for IP tests.
  4. Plan and conduct Bill of Materials (BOM) FTO reviews for New Product Development (NPD) at the product level across automotive technology domains, implement best-in-class practices, standardize processes, and enhance productivity through digitalization. Periodically sign off IP test plans with design teams.
  5. Release periodic IP alerts - review and dispose concerns from stakeholders, effectively build conviction with stakeholders, and manage projects/business clusters independently.
  6. Plan, conduct FTO/state-of-the-art search analysis on Long-Range Planning (LRP)/advanced technology and trigger timely protection of all forms of IP across major global jurisdictions.
  7. Be well-versed with industry best practices, state-of-the-art tools for IP searches, and perform searches across multiple jurisdictions. Plan and conduct search for SOA, FTO, litigation, and invalidation/opposition search in liaison with legal associates.
  8. Review and resolve claim interpretation issues in FTO with stakeholders, liaise with the legal team for effective disposal. Maintain confidentiality of IP matters, systematically docket records, and best-in-class IP culture.

Qualification in IP Law and WON certificate will be an advantage.
