Job Description

The Category Manager will drive the General Merchandise category to deliver strong business performance in line with company strategy.

This role involves assortment planning, vendor management, pricing, promotions, and driving category profitability while ensuring an exciting product mix for customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a category strategy that meets customer needs, market trends, and company objectives.
  • Plan assortment, pricing, and promotional strategies to maximize sales and profitability.
  • Track and analyze category performance, market share, and competitor activity.

Buying & Vendor Management:

  • Negotiate and onboard vendors/suppliers for the GM category.
  • Negotiate terms including pricing, margins, credit, and delivery schedules.
  • Build partnerships with suppliers to ensure reliable supply and innovation in product range.

Merchandising & Assortment:

  • Design the product assortment, including core, seasonal, and promotional lines.
  • Ensure the right product mix is available across stores and channels.
  • Work with the visual merchandising team to ensure effective in-store presentation.

Financial & Business Management:

  • Own the P&L of the General Merchandise category.
  • Drive margin improvement through sourcing and cost negotiations.
  • Monitor sales, inventory, and stock turnover, ensuring optimal stock levels.

Cross-functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with SCM for demand planning and replenishment.
  • Partner with Marketing for promotional campaigns and product launches.
  • Collaborate with Store Operations to ensure seamless execution of category initiatives.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Graduate/Postgraduate in Business Administration, Retail Management, or related field.
  • 6–10 years of experience in buying/category management, in General Merchandise or related categories.
  • Experience in hypermarket/large-format retail is required.
  • Proven track record of handling P&L responsibility.
  • Analytical and numerical skills with business acumen.
  • Negotiation and vendor management expertise.
  • Understanding of retail landscape.
  • Customer-centric approach with ability to anticipate trends.
  • Planning and execution skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, and category management tools.
