Job Title: Senior Database Administrator

Job Description

The Senior Database Administrator will lead the architectural design of highly scalable and available database solutions using Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining high-availability database clusters that meet performance and cost-effectiveness goals.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Data Modeling: Developing and evangelizing best practices for data modeling, sharding, and partitioning strategies to optimize for both transactional (OLTP) and analytical (OLAP) workloads.
  • Cluster Configuration: Evaluating and recommending the optimal cluster configuration, including node count, SKU, and scaling policies, to meet performance and cost-effectiveness goals.

Advanced Performance Optimization involves:

  • Conducting in-depth performance analysis and tuning of complex SQL queries, database configurations, and distributed table structures.
  • Utilizing advanced monitoring tools (e.g., Azure Monitor, pg_stat_statements) to identify and resolve performance bottlenecks at the cluster, node, and query level.

High Availability and Disaster Recovery includes:

  • Designing, implementing, and testing robust high-availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR) strategies for production clusters.
  • Automating backup, restore, and failover processes to ensure business continuity and meet strict RTO/RPO objectives.

Operational Excellence and Automation requires:

  • Developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) scripts (e.g., Terraform, ARM templates) to automate the provisioning, scaling, and management of database clusters.
  • Implementing advanced monitoring, alerting, and logging solutions to ensure the proactive management of database health.

Security and Compliance Leadership entails:

  • Defining and enforcing comprehensive database security policies, including encryption, access control, and network security (e.g., Azure Private Link).
  • Ensuring all database solutions meet regulatory and corporate compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA).

Mentorship and Collaboration is a key aspect:

  • Serving as the subject matter expert on Azure Cosmos DB for PostgreSQL, providing technical leadership and guidance to cross-functional teams.
  • Leading design and code reviews, and helping define technical standards and best practices for the entire organization.

Required Skills & Experience include:

  • Compute & Serverless: Lambda, Batch, API Gateway, Step Functions
  • Storage & Databases: Azure Blob Storage, Azure Data Lake, Cosmos DB
  • DevOps & Automation: Terraform
  • Security & Identity: Azure Active Directory, Entra
  • Monitoring: Azure Monitor
  • Networking: Azure VNET
  • Good understanding of microservices and event-driven architectures.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Proficiency in scripting (Python, Bash) and familiarity with tools like Git.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Preferred Qualifications include:

  • Azure Certification(s) such as Azure Certified Solutions Architect, Developer, or SysOps Admin.
  • Experience working in agile/scrum environments.
  • Exposure to AI/ML services is a plus.
