Climate Adaptation Specialist Role Summary

 

This position is responsible for developing and implementing climate adaptation strategies to support national governments in their efforts to address the impacts of climate change.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing Climate Adaptation Strategies: The specialist will work closely with government agencies, civil society, and other stakeholders to develop and implement climate adaptation strategies that are tailored to the needs of each country.
  • Conducting Vulnerability Assessments: The specialist will conduct vulnerability assessments to identify areas where climate change is likely to have the most significant impacts and develop strategies to mitigate these risks.
  • Strategic Planning: The specialist will apply climate models and risk analytics to inform strategic planning and prioritization of adaptation responses.
  • Funding Proposals: The specialist will evaluate techno-commercial feasibility of proposed interventions and map relevant financing sources to support funding proposals for climate adaptation.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: The specialist will facilitate inclusive stakeholder consultations to engage government agencies, civil society, youth, women, and vulnerable groups in the adaptation process.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: The specialist will align adaptation strategies with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national development plans, contributing to the design of Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems.
  • Policy Recommendations: The specialist will draft technical content for reports, presentations, and policy briefs to provide policy recommendations that strengthen climate resilience and adaptation integration.
  • Collaboration and Implementation: The specialist will collaborate with public and private sector stakeholders to support implementation and resource mobilization, ensuring effective adaptation strategy execution.

 

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Education: An advanced degree in climate science, environmental studies, sustainable development, natural resource management, or a related discipline.
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in climate adaptation, resilience planning, or related fields, with demonstrated involvement in developing or updating NDCs, LT-LEDS, or NAPs, particularly in developing country contexts.
  • Skills: Proficiency in conducting CVRAs and translating findings into actionable strategies, experience working with climate models and interpreting risk projections, strong grasp of techno-commercial analysis, cost estimation, and financing pathways.
  • Knowledge: Familiarity with climate finance mechanisms such as GCF, GEF, and bilateral donor programs, exposure to UNFCCC reporting processes (BUR, TNC, BTR) is an advantage.

 

Preferred Attributes

  • National Government Support: Prior experience supporting national governments in climate strategy development.
  • Consulting Experience: Background in climate and sustainability consulting or advisory roles.
  • Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Knowledge of ecosystem-based adaptation, nature-based solutions, and coastal resilience approaches.
  • Gender and Social Inclusion: Ability to integrate gender and social inclusion into adaptation planning.
