Job Summary

A medical doctor specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the digestive system. The role encompasses managing a wide range of conditions, from common issues like heartburn and irritable bowel syndrome to more complex illnesses such as inflammatory bowel disease and liver disease.

  • Consultations are conducted, diagnostic procedures performed (like endoscopies and colonoscopies), treatment plans developed, and patients educated accordingly.
  • The gastroenterologist must diagnose and treat diseases and disorders of the digestive system, including gastrointestinal cancer, stomach ulcers, and Crohn's disease.
  • Treatment plans for patients with various gastrointestinal conditions are developed and implemented.
  • Endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy are performed.
  • Results of laboratory tests and imaging studies related to the digestive system are interpreted.
  • Collaboration with other healthcare professionals is essential to provide comprehensive care to patients.

Required Qualifications

  • M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution.
  • Completion of a fellowship program in gastroenterology.
  • Licensure to practice medicine in the state.
  • Board certification in gastroenterology.
  • Excellent clinical skills and ability to communicate effectively with patients.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
