Job Summary:

The Culinary Arts Assistant position is an entry-level opportunity for ambitious chefs to kickstart their careers in a professional kitchen environment. Working under the guidance of the Chef de Partie, this role involves assisting with food preparation, cooking, and kitchen maintenance tasks. The successful candidate will gain a broad understanding of kitchen operations by rotating through various sections, including sauces, vegetables, fish, and butchery.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Food Preparation: Assist in preparing ingredients by washing, peeling, chopping, and slicing, as directed by the Chef de Partie.
  • Cooking Assistance: Provide support with basic cooking tasks, such as sautéing, grilling, boiling, or frying, under the supervision of the Chef de Partie.
  • Section Rotation: Rotate through different kitchen sections to gain diverse culinary skills and experience.
  • Maintaining Kitchen Standards: Adhere to food safety and sanitation guidelines to ensure the kitchen remains clean and organized.
  • Equipment Use: Safely and efficiently operate kitchen equipment, such as knives, ovens, grills, and mixers.
  • Stock Management: Ensure that all ingredients and supplies are stocked, and report any shortages or equipment malfunctions.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with the rest of the kitchen team to ensure efficient kitchen operations and smooth service.
  • Quality Control: Help maintain food quality by adhering to recipe specifications, portion control, and presentation standards.
  • Health & Safety Compliance: Adhere to all health, safety, and hygiene standards in the kitchen, including safe handling of food and cleaning duties.
Requirements:
  • Education: A certificate or diploma in Culinary Arts, Food Production, or a related field is required.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Basic Cooking Skills: Knowledge of cooking techniques and food preparation methods is beneficial.
    • Food Safety & Hygiene: Basic understanding of food safety, hygiene, and kitchen cleanliness standards.
    • Time Management: Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and manage time effectively to meet service demands.
    • Communication: Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
    • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail in food preparation and presentation.
    • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new skills and rotate through different sections of the kitchen.
    • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a positive kitchen atmosphere.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and perform manual tasks such as lifting, bending, and reaching.
  • Ability to work in a hot, fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to handle kitchen tools (e.g., knives, mixers) safely and efficiently.
