Key Responsibilities- Operate Heart-Lung Machine: The perfusionist sets up and operates the cardiopulmonary bypass machine to monitor and control the patient's blood flow, oxygen levels, temperature, and other vital parameters during surgery. They administer blood products, fluids, and medications as prescribed by the surgical team.
- Pre-Operative Preparation: Before each surgery, the perfusionist reviews the patient's history and surgical plan to determine the appropriate perfusion techniques and equipment required. They prepare and calibrate the perfusion machines and ensure the availability of oxygenators, pumps, filters, and related disposables. The perfusionist conducts pre-operative system checks and safety verifications.
- Intraoperative Monitoring and Support: During surgery, the perfusionist continuously monitors blood gases, electrolytes, coagulation, hemodynamics, and patient temperature. They adjust flows, pressures, and oxygen delivery in real-time based on the patient's condition and surgical needs. The perfusionist maintains accurate documentation of perfusion data, medications administered, and any intraoperative incidents.
- Post-Operative Duties: After surgery, the perfusionist assists in weaning the patient from the CPB machine and transitions them back to normal heart and lung function. They clean, sterilize, and maintain the perfusion equipment after use. The perfusionist participates in postoperative debriefings and reports on perfusion-related issues.
- Extracorporeal Life Support (ECLS / ECMO): The perfusionist operates and manages ECMO systems for critically ill patients in ICU settings. They provide 24/7 monitoring and support when assigned to patients on long-term life support.
- Collaboration and Communication: The perfusionist works in coordination with the surgical team to ensure optimal perfusion management. They communicate clearly during critical situations and respond promptly to surgical team instructions. The perfusionist participates in training sessions, emergency drills, and case reviews.
- Equipment Maintenance and Inventory: The perfusionist ensures all perfusion-related equipment is maintained in proper working order. They track the inventory of perfusion supplies and request procurement as needed. The perfusionist stays up to date on new technologies and techniques in perfusion science.
