The Akanksha Foundation is on a mission to build one of the largest and most innovative networks of schools in India, serving children from low-income communities, to maximize their potential. Over the last 30+ years, Akanksha has been at the forefront of proving what’s possible for children from low-income communities in Mumbai and Pune. Our 5,100 alumni are on the path to living an empowered life. Today, Akanksha runs 26 schools in partnership with the governments of Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Navi Mumbai and Nagpur serving ~13,000 children in grades Jr Kg – Gr 10.


Position: Manager, Research

Team: Impact & Research

Location: Mumbai or Pune

Compensation: INR 90k to 1lac monthly gross (approx)

Reports to: Director, Impact & Research


Position Summary: In this role you will be expected to lead and execute internal program evaluations and research projects (both internal and external) that will lead to an understanding of the impact of Akanksha’s intervention on its students, alumni, parents and communities at large.

Overview of the Team: The Impact & Research team plays a key role in collecting and using data to measure the impact of Akanksha programs. The team works with metrics like enrolment, student engagement, retention, socio-emotional development and child safety, assessment scores, parent and community engagement, teacher attendance & retention, and school culture, etc. for all the 26 Akanksha schools. The team is involved in data collection, interprets data and analyzes results using statistical techniques, and provides reports to various stakeholders (internal and external). The Impact function acts as a database of insights and reports and seeks to acquire data from primary or secondary data sources on Akanksha as well as the education landscape nationally and internationally. The Research team focuses on creating standardized measurements, curating knowledge and evidence, evaluating the impact of the programs and managing external research partnerships.


What your role will entail

● Lead and execute end to end program evaluations and research projects (both internal and external) that will lead to an understanding of the impact of Akanksha’s intervention, right from formulation of hypothesis to formulating and executing research design including literature reviews, data collection/mining, analysis and documentation, managing external partners (if any) and producing high-quality powerful research outputs for different audiences: academic papers, short policy briefs, op-eds, blogs etc.

● Strengthening and broadening Akanksha’s use of methods of evaluation and incorporating quantitative and qualitative data into its work.

● Remain current on developments in Akanksha’s areas of work - monitor, analyze, and report on emerging policy issues, maintain knowledge of government policy decisions and conduct quick market scans for policy responsiveness.

● Identifying initiatives within Akanksha that could be valuable research subjects for external researchers and designing and executing research studies as appropriate.

● Collaborating with academic institutions to identify opportunities for the organization to engage with graduate/postgraduate students interested in research.

● Leading efforts with individual or group of researchers to gain research grants.

● Identifying, studying and sharing relevant external research as is appropriate across the organization and driving visibility at State and National level for advocacy based on research.

● Developing strategic relationships in the government, private sector, advocacy organizations and other NGOs to drive the advocacy agenda.

● Preparing reports and presentations for both internal and external use; write, commission and contribute to a range of reports, whitepapers, feature articles based on learnings from Akanksha’s work.

● Assisting internal stakeholders with research (interviews, desk research, literature review) on organizational priorities to assist in informed decision making.


What you need for this Position

Skills & Experience :

● 5+ years of evaluation / action research experience (Preference will be given to candidates who have handled large-scale social research projects from beginning to end)

● Experience analyzing large data sets using statistical software such as R, Stata, SPSS, etc.

● Thorough knowledge of quasi-experimental research methods and sampling techniques

● Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication to explain complex concepts clearly with visual tools.

● Task Management: Excellent at prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and adapting to changes.

● Data Wrangling: Skilled in gathering, cleaning, and organizing large datasets for quality analysis.

● Research and Experimental Design: Proficient in designing experiments, conducting research, and ensuring ethical standards.

● Data Analysis & Insights: Expertise in statistical/ inferential analysis, identifying trends, and deriving clear insights.

● Logframes & Theory of Change: Experienced in developing ToC/LFA templates and linking inputs to measurable outcomes.

● Scientific Writing: Skilled in writing structured research reports, ensuring accurate representation of data and findings.

Education:

● Bachelors /Master's degree or above in a related field such as education, statistics, development studies
