ACS Publications is a Division of the ACS and has all the characteristics of a medium-large scientific and technical publishing organization. It is one of two Divisions charged with serving the dual function of generating a reliable annual surplus to support the Society’s programmatic activities, while also fulfilling a core goal of the Society in advancing knowledge in the field of chemistry and the chemical enterprise. The Division publishes 85+ high-quality peer-reviewed journals covering the breadth of chemistry and allied fields, as well as numerous other high-quality products and services of benefit to the global community.

The Publishing Group consists of six main teams: Business Intelligence & Analytics, Chemical & Engineering News, Global Editorial Operations, Global Editorial Strategy, Global Production Operations, and Strategic Partnerships, China. These teams collaborate to optimize the editorial direction and production of our journals, and to ensure that our authors and reviewers have a positive publishing experience. In support of that mission, the Global Editorial Strategy team focuses on the effective operations and strategic development of the suite of ACS Publications’ journals, both hybrid and open access titles. This team delivers new products on an annual and ongoing basis based on an assessment of the existing portfolio relative to the research landscape. The Global Editorial Strategy team also provides strategic guidance to ACS Editors-in-Chief to maximize the impact and success of the journals and is central to ensuring the Editors and editorial direction of the journals optimally serve the mission of the ACS.

Job Description
Reporting to a US-based Assistant Director and Publisher in the Global Editorial Strategy team, the Commissioning Manager will be responsible for global developments of the portfolio through strategic commissioning efforts in partnership with the broad Global Editorial Strategy team according to strategic priorities and market needs. The incumbent will identify and develop strategies that will drive growth in journal content and enhance the journals’ standing within the global chemistry community. Managing these business-critical activities will involve market research, competitive analyses, annual target setting and tracking, and detailed project planning and implementation. The Commissioning Manager will also manage two Contractors who will be supporting the operations and logistics of the commissioning efforts.

Exceptionally qualified candidates will be considered to fulfill this role at a higher job level.

Responsibilities
The Commissioning Editor will have two primary areas of focus, as follows:
1. Oversight of broad editorial commissioning activities
Proactively provides information and resources to aid the Global Editorial Strategy team to grow the high-quality output of ACS journals.
Responsible for the evaluation of market needs through a data-centric approach. This involves primary and secondary market research in collaboration with the Business Intelligence & Analytics.
Identify key regional and topical gaps and with publishers create global strategies to attract new high-quality content and lead in the identification of opportunities for special issues to support growth in trending areas.
Develop, in collaboration with the Assistant Director and Publishers for the proprietary journals, attainable commissioning and growth goals in support of Divisional objectives to grow high-quality output and increase influence.
Responsible for the development of outreach strategies to engage and retain authors in key regions and topical areas.
Strong collaboration between marketing and editorial development is expected.

2. Cultivate Relationships External/Internal to ACS Publications and to the Society
Serve as a representative of the Publications Division in interacting with outside parties, such as the ACS journal editors and advisory board members, external contractors and prospective authors.
Work collaboratively with ACS Publications staff, IT, Membership, and staff within Chemical Abstracts Service to identify and develop opportunities to employ new technology and strategy for more effective commissioning.
Oversee the Global Editorial Strategy site visit program. Design the outreach strategy, decide on the list of institutions to target and report on outcome of outreach activities.

Required Skills:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the sciences; advanced degree (M.S./Ph.D. or MBA) preferred.
A keen, experience-based understanding of how to grow a journal.
Strong indirect-influence skills.
Strong communications skills, both written and oral, including effective presentation skills when making recommendations to large/senior groups which could include diverse audiences.
Strong relationship building capabilities.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills are required, together with the ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities, ability to manage one’s own workload, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines, balancing both long term goals/projects and day-to-day deliverables.
Fluency in English with good verbal and written communication skills (good use of language, grammar, and syntax).

Required Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of direct editorial experience in scientific and technical publishing or relevant management experience required. Exceptionally experienced candidates will be considered to fulfill this role at a higher internal job level.
Successful experience with project planning and developing new business opportunities in support of strategic plans.
Experience in using computer software, including word processing, spreadsheets for data analysis, and slide preparation for presentations with the acumen to quickly learn and apply additional computer-assisted tools.

Travel Expectations:
Some travel (up to 20%) within country. Occasional international travel may be required with advanced notice.

Additional Notes:
This position is based in the India offices of the American Chemical Society International in Delhi. Some travel may be required. ACS Publications employees work a hybrid work schedule, consisting of working onsite two days per week. New employees are immediately eligible for this hybrid work arrangement. ACS offers relocation assistance, if applicable.
