Senior OT Technician

Assist surgeons during all types of surgeries (General, Ortho, Lap, Cardiac, Neuro, etc.) Supervise junior OT technicians and ensure readiness of the OT Maintain OT instruments, sterilization procedures, and equipment functioning Monitor and manage surgical consumables and inventory Adhere to infection control protocols and surgical safety standardsKey Responsibilities:1. Pre-operative Preparation: Prepare the operation theatre before each procedure by ensuring availability and proper functioning of all necessary instruments and equipment. Arrange surgical instruments, sterile drapes, sutures, and consumables required for specific surgeries. Check and calibrate OT equipment such as surgical lights, suction machines, cautery, anesthesia machines, and monitors. Assist the surgical and anesthesia teams in setting up the patient for surgery. 2. Intra-operative Assistance: Assist surgeons during surgeries by passing instruments, maintaining the sterile field, and handling surgical tools and equipment. Ensure continuous supply of sterile materials throughout the procedure. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and respond promptly and accurately. Monitor the environment to maintain sterility and assist in the operation of technical devices during surgery. 3. Post-operative Procedures: Safely collect and dispose of used instruments, ensuring all items are accounted for and correctly decontaminated. Transport specimens to the laboratory following safety protocols. Clean and disinfect the operating theatre and prepare it for the next case. Support in the safe transfer of patients from OT to recovery rooms or ICUs. 4. Sterilization and Infection Control: Oversee the sterilization of surgical instruments and ensure proper autoclave functioning. Monitor sterilization records and ensure compliance with infection control policies and hospital guidelines. Maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness in the OT area. Follow strict protocols for handling contaminated materials, waste, and linen. 5. Equipment and Inventory Management: Ensure availability and proper functioning of all OT equipment. Perform regular checks, basic troubleshooting, and maintenance of surgical equipment. Maintain adequate inventory of surgical supplies, consumables, and instruments. Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate with biomedical or maintenance teams. 6. Supervision and Team Coordination: Guide and supervise junior OT technicians and support staff. Train new staff and monitor their compliance with OT standards and safety protocols. Act as the point of contact between nursing teams, surgeons, anesthetists, and housekeeping for smooth operation scheduling. Participate in pre-operative briefings and post-operative debriefings. 7. Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate records of OT procedures, equipment usage, sterilization logs, and incident reports. Ensure all surgical count protocols (instrument, sponge, needle) are properly followed and documented. Adhere to hospital accreditation standards (e.g., NABH, JCI) regarding OT management. 8. Emergency Preparedness: Be prepared to assist in emergency or trauma cases on short notice. Ensure crash carts, emergency drugs, and critical instruments are always ready and stocked. Support critical care and surgical teams in case of intra-operative complications.Required Skills and Competencies: In-depth understanding of surgical procedures, OT instrumentation, and sterilization practices. Knowledge of aseptic techniques and infection prevention standards. Strong communication and coordination skills to interact effectively with surgeons, anesthetists, and nursing staff. Ability to stay calm, focused, and efficient under pressure, especially during critical or emergency surgeries. Team leadership and mentoring abilities to guide junior technicians. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
