PATH is a global nonprofit dedicated to achieving health equity. With more than 40 years of experience forging multisector partnerships and with expertise in science, economics, technology, advocacy, and dozens of other specialties, PATH develops and scales up innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing heath challenges.
About the project
This is a rapid pilot study to gauge the user acceptability for non-invasive hemoglobinometers in primary care settings. Most hemoglobin estimation methods in use today are invasive, and cause discomfort to the patient, require consistent and timely supply of consumables, need trained staff; and generate large quantities of waste. Non-invasive point of care devices (POCD) can enable mass population-level screening and early indication of anemia, which is highly prevalent in India. It would enable painless screening through easy-to-use devices, reduce need of consumables, and can empower frontline workers through instant results. Screening through non-invasive methods can greatly reduce delay in detecting cases of hemoglobin deficiency that need early attention. Non-invasive devices can additionally be used in high load OPDs to screen patients as well as regularly monitoring IPD patients.
However, such use has not been explored in public health settings. Thus, PATH is conducting a feasibility pilot of non-invasive hemoglobinometers across levels of health facilities to generate an evidence base for or against such a screening intervention. PATH will deploy select hemoglobinometers in pre-identified Sub centers, PHCs/CHC, in two districts, namely Deoria and Gorakhpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh, to:
- Deployment of non-invasive hemoglobinometers in two districts of Uttar Pradesh.
- Collection of programmatic user feedback regarding usage of non-invasive hemoglobinometers.
