Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)

**Main purpose of job**:
We are looking for a dynamic communications/Public Relations professional to design, drive and deliver communications for the British Deputy High Commission in Chennai.

**Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?**:
The Digital Communications Officer will be responsible for promoting the work of the Deputy High Commission in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and within the UK in India network. They will be based in Chennai but join the Press and Communications network at the British High Commission, which provides an intimate yet fast-paced work environment. They will regularly interact with the Deputy High Commissioner and the organisation’s senior leadership team. The role requires exceptional inter-personal skills and a proven ability to influence others to achieve positive outcomes both for the individuals and for the (Deputy) High Commission.

**The role will be split up as below**:
**Digital (50%)**
- Drive the strategy and the creation of content reflecting the work and aspirations of UK in India, starting from social media all the way to blogs, pod casts, newsletters.
- Develop and own the BDHC’s strategy for increasing audience engagement across social media platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
- Conceptualise themes and create content for flagship events and other commemorative days and campaigns observed by the network.
- Train colleagues working across the BDHC in order to “mainstream” communications activity and ensure all staff support the creation of content that “tells a story”.

**Public Relations (25%)**
- Promote the work of the (Deputy) High Commission to an external audience using a variety of media (print, digital, television, radio) including offline events. Ensure the Tamil speaking audiences are able to engage with the work done by the UK in south India and build brand awareness e.g. GREAT.
- Manage relationships with key regional stakeholders such as government, private sector, non-profits, civil society organisations and influencers working closely with the UKinIndia team’s political and trade colleagues to ensure a coherent approach e.g. when engaging journalists.
- Work closely with colleagues across the UK network of posts in India to maximise our reach and ensure regional campaigns are closely coordinated.

**Communications (25%)**
- Produce and coordinate reporting and content for internal newsletters, bulletins and other communication channels in the network.
- Conceptualize and strategize moments and opportunities for living bridge and such other story telling campaigns

Lead on the branding strategies and design of programs organized by the (Deputy) High Commission

**Resources managed (staff and expenditure)**:
No resources, manage Press and Communication budget for the post

**Language requirements**:
Language: English and Tamil (knowledge of any other Indian language is a bonus)

Level of language required: Fluent

**Learning and development opportunities (and any specific training courses to be completed)**:
Strong knowledge of desktop publishing and multimedia editing software including Canva, Adobe Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro

Essential qualifications, skills and experience

**Essential on arrival**:

- Two years of work experience in a social media marketing or multimedia production role or similar role Press/PR/Communications role in a professional PR/Communications team/institution.
- Strong knowledge of desktop publishing and multimedia editing software including Canva, Adobe Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro.
- Proven specialised expertise in design, creation and deployment of digital content across digital/social media platforms. Fluency/expertise in use of cross-digital skills (skill in still photography, videography and graphic designing for use on digital platforms and skill in loading content to/deploying the full range of social media platforms/channels - Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook
- Proven record in managing/leading/delivering largescale/high-profile Press/PR/Communication/Digital campaigns in a competitive market.
- Extensive contacts/ and understanding of English & Vernacular Press & Broadcast & Digital Media in the region.

Applicants will additionally be passionate about community, conversations and getting into the nuances of how conversation and engagement work, both online and offline.
