Product Manager, Advice Engines

Product(s) – Advice Engines:

The Advice Engines Product Team supports several products including the Wealth Forecasting Engine ( WFE ), a web-based investment forecasting and planning tool, and Automated Portfolio Construction ( APC ), a flexible RESTful API, built to construct fund-of-funds portfolios that optimally implement a target asset allocation based on configurable parameters.The Morningstar Wealth Forecasting Engine uses Monte Carlo simulations in forecasting how long a person’s money might last -based on a mix of investment products, asset types, risk levels, and savings behavior. Financial services providers can embed the Wealth Forecasting Engine within their own online portals to enable investors and advisers in their development of a personalized investment plan to include estimated retirement expenses; projected income shortfall; probability of meeting retirement needs in good, fair, and poor market conditions; and income draw-down analysis.

Team – Advice Engines Product :

The product team consists of talented Quantitative Analysts and Product Managers who help make the Advice Engines products part of what sets Morningstar apart from its competitors. The members of our product team possess a range of skills and knowledge bases and work closely with developers and Quality Assurance personnel.Collectively, we all care deeply about creating positive user experiences. Role – Product Manager:

The Advice Engines Product Manageris a highly visible representative of our Advice Engines Product Team. The Product Manageris responsible for leading product definition, gathering requirements, and collaborating with the development, business, and implementation teams to ensure requirements are translated from business needs to technical requirements. The Product Manager works closely with the development team to ensure they have the requirements needed to develop new functionality within our products. 

Responsibilities: 

More specifically, the Product Manager has the following responsibilities: 

For APC, develop an in-depth understanding of Fund-of-Funds Portfolio Construction methodology and implementation

Define the product goals and deliver these goals to market

Work closely with investments, research and product development teams and derive business, functional and technical requirements

Clarify and translate product requirements into functional and non-functional specifications and collaborate in the product development process

Work with developers and other product team members to prioritize the development timeline

Critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile conflicts, decompose high-level information into details, abstract from low-level information to a general understanding, and distinguish user requests from the underlying true needs

Make sure tasks fit into the larger project plans

Communicate progress against tasks as required to end-to-end project owners

May own product development for less complex products/capabilities or for product features.

Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree is required. Optimally the bachelor’s degree would be in business, computer science, or math 

Five years or more experience working in product ownership or product management in business or finance

Strong attention to detail, excellent verbal, written, and analytical skills

Ability to multi-task and manage several projects at any given time

Ability to collaborate, act as a team player, communicate across various layers of the organization, and work in cross-functional distributed teams

Expert level proficiency in a programming language (Python and SQL preferred)

Expert level proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint

Strong project management skills

Working knowledge of product development in an agile SDLC framework

Expertise in investment vehicles/asset classes: mutual funds, fixed income securities, and equities, etc.

Nice to Have

Good experience of software engineering and writing scalable, performance efficient codes using Python, MATLAB, R, or VBA

Proficiency in statistical modeling language (see above, R or Python)

Familiarity with portfolio construction, asset allocation, capital market assumptions, factor modelling, risk and return attribution, asset return forecasting, portfolio optimization, Monte Carlo simulation

Working knowledge of the how advisors/wealth managers provide advice and solve common investor problems: accumulation, retirement income
