Description

The Lead DevOps Engineer (LDE) role is a key function in the DevOps organization. The function works across the full length of the software delivery pipeline, supporting software engineering through to delivery to Production. You will be implementing and enhancing our build, deployment and operational management tooling, executing it in all environments, including Production and taking feedback from that process and folding it back into the improvements backlog. The DevOps team is aggressively adopting new technologies and architectural principles, as well as approaches to delivery, deployment, scalability and monitoring. The successful candidate is expected to be a strong technologist, with both software engineering and technical operations backgrounds.

Note: Our office works in a hybrid model. As per policy this role is required to work from office 2 mandatory days in a week.

At times, may be called on during “out of office” hours to support production issue resolution.
Roles and responsibilities

Line management of technical resources including pastoral care, formal reviews and both identification and provisioning of training needs Management of resources to ensure the appropriate team shape, levels of experience/capability and fulfilment of roles - including the recruitment of technical employees. Manage implementation of DevOps engineering strategy, ensuring stakeholders are on board and measuring progress through KPIs. Deputize for the DevOps Manager as required. Management involvement with regards to team size, balance and other resource needs. Engineers are focused primarily on delivering technical solutions for improving the overall quality of product build, deployments, monitoring and alerting, with emphasis on NFRs (resilience, stability, scalability, security etc.) Help ensure that our test environments are stable at all times. Help implement a CI / CD strategy to incorporate the entire product development lifecycle as well as the continual evolution of cross functional collaboration, associated best practices, and standards. Help ensure all underlying technologies (open source software, commercial software, frameworks etc.) used across Engineering teams have a clear version deprecation and upgrade path. Create accurate documentation for use by the Development, QA, Technical Operations, Product, Support, etc. Work on ongoing R&D effort into tools, processes, and people to further enhance DevOps capabilities. Help manage consistent application of the DevOps methodologies amongst the Engineering teams. Help ensure security considerations are robustly incorporated into deliverables from day one. Participate in defining and prioritizing a backlog of work for the team. Participate in an “out of hours” support rota. Ensure the provisioning of all our environments are fully automated and tested. Ensure the right level of visibility on environment health by exposing the required metrics. Lead a team of DevOps engineers and take responsibility for the team deliverables. Mentor junior team members.

Key Skills & Experience

A Bachelor’s degree in CS or equivalent required. Around 10 years of commercial hands-on software development or systems architecture, implementation and ongoing automation experience in a previous role. Atleast 3 years of experience leading a technical team (preferably DevOps team). Software development experience is a huge plus. Sound experience in identifying, implementing and maintaining IT solutions/systems in heavily regulated markets/industries. Proven accountability for delivering technical components of both major IT or commercial projects and ongoing “BAU” programmes. Ability to run a small DevOps team that is part of a larger DevOps group. Proven communication and presentation skills. Comfortable in a rapidly changing environment. Able to articulate on processes and tools utilized to ensure quality, stability, performance, scalability, deployment, security, maintenance and documentation. Knowledge and understanding of latest trends in DevOps methodologies, processes and tools, as well as emerging solutions and ability to recommend/apply them when appropriate. Attitude, willingness and flexibility to learn and handle given problems/tasks in areas/technologies you may not have had prior experience in.

Technical skills

Essential

Hands-on experience in all facets of automation and systems architecture, with particular focus on Linux and open source technologies. Solid knowledge & experience of cloud-based systems (AWS preferably). Knowledge of both relational databases and various NoSQL based data storage solutions. Understanding of opensource solutions that enable the implementation of highly distributed, scalable, durable, and performant platforms such as Kafka. Demonstrable experience with agile methodologies and tools for development and operations. Experience with CI/CD solutions, such as Git, Maven, Gradle, Jenkins, Sonar and Ansible. Experienced with open source solutions for configuration management, elastic scaling, service discovery, and cloud management. Practical knowledge of Docker & Kubernetes. Experience with terraform (ideally on AWS or VMware). Experience in managing teams e2e – hire, train, supervise, mentor, plan career, set goals, manage performance and recommend merits/promotions. Excellent communication, collaboration and presentation skills.

Domain knowledge is not required, but having worked on a Sportsbook, Casino or e-Commerce projects would be preferable.
