Sybase database engineer

We're Hiring – Sybase database engineer (2 to 12 Years Experience)

Location: Chennai / Bangalore

Key Responsibilities

• Automate regular patch deployments, installations, and other routine tasks.
• Design and develop scalable database architectures to meet business requirements, along with recommending hardware and network solutions.
• Optimize data storage, retrieval, and indexing for improved performance efficiency.
• Ensure top drawer data integrity, security, and compliance with industry standards.
• Collaborate with application developers, system administrators, and other teams to enhance database operations and support.
• Proficient in performance tuning of optimizing queries and infra issues.
• Design and manage Sybase ASE, RS & IQ configurations and systems.
• Configure and monitor Sybase replication for both homogeneous and heterogeneous environments.
• Proficient in designing DR and resiliency strategies and underlying infrastructure architecture.
• Work closely with application developers to optimize database interactions.
• Design and drive technology evolution initiatives including proof of concepts (POCs), benchmarks, R&D, etc.
• Research and recommend new database technologies through POCs.
• Proficiency in documenting database structures, policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge and experience on Azure or AWS - including integration across in-house and cloud platforms - would be preferable.
• Responsible to design, implement, and manage cloud-based Sybase database solutions.
• Manage projects and ensure technical solutions meet business needs.
• Proficient in managing migration of Sybase ASE to MSSQL/PostgreSQL.
• Coach, mentor, and develop team members around areas of technology and soft skills.

Mandatory Skills / Experience

• Good team working skills, ability to work in shifts (24x7 on rotation basis) / ability to work alone with a positive attitude.
• In-depth knowledge of Sybase ASE, RS & IQ architecture, configuration & performance tuning.
• Proficient on migration & upgradation of Sybase Server (Legacy Mgt).
• Good experience on automating regular & EBF patch deployments, installations, and other BAU tasks.
• Extensive experience in index defragmentation, re-indexing, updating index statistics, and query tuning.
• Experience on shell scripting and other programming languages to automate database operations.
• Experience in using Performance Monitor, optimizing queries, tracing long-running queries, blockings, and deadlocks.
• Account Management (Login Creation, Deletion, Profile Modification) & managing Security/Audit parameters.
• Performance Tuning, Query Optimization, Client/Server Connectivity.
• Knowledge on index de-fragmentation, re-indexing and updating index statistics.
• Configuration & Monitoring Sybase Replication (Homogeneous & Heterogeneous).
• Periodical backups of the database and timely recovery when required. Scheduling the automated backup jobs.
• Scheduling, monitoring, and troubleshooting Sybase Agent Jobs/Autosys Maintenance Jobs.
• Troubleshooting and fixing data corruption (Page, table level).
• Preparing/Updating SOPs documents (Technical & Operational).
• Sybase solutions on public cloud platforms like Azure & AWS.
• Strong analysis & problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve complex database issues.
• Strong knowledge on Production Database Operations & understanding the importance of BAU.
• Good knowledge on ITIL Framework, experience in Incident Management, and managing crisis calls with vendors & clients.
• Strong presentation skills with PPT and expertise in Excel (functions & macros).
• Good experience on client projects/domains, end-to-end project management, setting up technology roadmap.
• Preferred experience on LEAN methodology to optimize BAU tasks.
• Willing to accept/take responsibility and ownership. Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment.
• Ability to skill-up on new concepts, features, and open-source technologies, while being mentors.
